Been getting a little frustrated with the Parkwood lately on Zwift and at times it's lack of gearing. I very rarely use anything other than 2 gears, especially when racing. The fact that it's also the smallest 2 cogs also means potential drivetrain losses and wear. I've tried everything over the years to fit new cranks, chainrings etc, but the simple fact is, you cannot run anything bigger than a 40T chainring on it.

So i've just ordered this

[img] [/img]

This comes with a triple chainset (i really wanted a double but couldn't find anything in the price bracket with the right double)

It'll be perfect for Zwift riding with 28/38/48 and also should me and Crust get out to Wevelgem one day it'll do a fine job at the Sportive too.

Well it's here, setup, ready and good to roll.

It's well, as you'd expect for a £400 bike, a bit cheap in some aspects, but it'll never go outside, so doesn't need to be great. It's exactly what it needs to be though.

ne thing i did notice yesterday was the shifters are horrible. They're proper old school type Shimano with one shifter underneath and the other on top of the shifter. Not a massive issue, so i decided i'd raid the spares box

The shifters and brakes are integrated into the same item, so i'll need

Left hand shifter (3X)
Right hand shifter
Front brake (already here, Guide RSC)
Rear brake (Already here, Guide RSC)
chain (Should have one spare)
cassette (Already here)
rear mech. (Already here, arguably could do with new jockey wheels soon)

Out of that list, I'm only missing a right hand shifter 10sp which i've ordered from Ebay and a 3 speed shifter for the front mech. Wondering though if i can use a 2 speed shifter i have here and not us the small ring. It's only for Zwifting so won't need the smaller ring at all.??

First job was chain and rear mech removing.

That also meant shortening the outer, well, techincally not as i wanted to keep all the standard stuff the same, so i used a shorter spare piece of inner and trimmed to length.

Then everything was removed from the bars.

Brakes removed from the calipers and then fitted the SRAM Guide RSC

Massive overkill there, but hey, it may go outside one day 🙂

Internal brake routing can be a pain, but got this one first time, really easy, lucky !!!

The eagle eyed among you will see the SRAM rear needs a barb and olive, but not got round to that just yet.

10 speed rear derailleur and wheel/cassette fitted.

Also fitted some Whyte slightly wider bars, about 40mm wider.

Jobs left

1. Purchase a 3 speed shifter
2. Fit 10 speed shifter once it arrives from Ebay
3. Fit barb and olive on rear brake
4. Bleed rear brake.

That looks fine to me.
Not sure i'd have bothered change anything, to be honest. So long as the shifters shift reliably, which they should do...?

I like the go-faster red tyre on the back! I could do with one of those on my turbo (or perhaps two!).

Interesting - I do seem to struggle keeping up with anyone on even the most basic Cat D rides with my 30T front ring

2x shifter should work fine but I think I've got a 3 speed lh shifter in the garage weeksy that you're welcome to.

I'll check and, assuming it's there I'll chuck it in the post.

Edit - nope, it's a double, you're still welcome to it mind!

You spent £400 on a bigger chainring? 🙂

That's a lot of effort for a turbo bike! I'd have just left it as-is, it doesn't really matter what the controls are like, don't really need the brakes either. My Zwift bike is the old commuter and apart from changing the chainset to a road one and refitting a front mech to get higher gears it's made up of old bits from my other bikes. 10 speed 105 cassette, 11 speed SLX clutch mech (with broken clutch), old 10 speed SLX rear shifter that's missing half it's cover, a knock-off front shifter and a second-hand Tiagra front mech. The Clarks brakes I fitted a few years ago are still on there but the front disc and pads have rusted together from sweat and the rear one has a spacer in it (direct drive turbo), they would have come off but they are useful as extra hand positions as I'm on flat bars.

As long as it works for you though that's all that matters. How much was the original bike and where had stock?

Looks great, I think the flat bars make sense on the turbo. I almost bought a new but cheap as possible bike for Zwift but was lucky that a perfect condition Boardman Sport came up fairly locally so I nabbed that, much better than MTB gearing!

Danger, I bought a 3 thanks, was only £17

Bike was from Tweeks, ordered on Wed morning, arrived yesterday. £425

I couldn't fit bigger than a 40T on the Parkwood which wasn't really enough, any bigger was a chainstay problem.

As for leaving as it was, sure I could have, but if something like the Paris Roubaix sportive or Gent Wevelgem happens then I'd like to have the nicer gears, but indoors it wouldn't have mattered. That said, all other bikes I ride are using SRAM and going back to Shimano for shifting felt weird.

The brakes are overkill of course, but they're just spares I had lying round.

I debated Boardman etc but with Covid prices inflating things I decided to just go new. You never know how many issues you're buying with some used bikes.

It also gives me a chance to tweak and play with the tools for a morning.

if its never going to be ridden outside, why on earth have you put brakes on it 😀

I'm conisdering taking my fron wheel off and rotating the forks backwards and mounting them to take up less space

What matters is that if it suits your needs, but it cost more than buying a Voodoo Marasa that has better spec (3x9, hydraulic brakes) with BC discount. Albeit you may have had to wait to collect it next week.

Wasn't aware of the Voodoo

I'm happy with the decision

Put my other reply on the wrong thread.

Well we got there,

I ordered a SRAM X7 10sp shifter which arrived and a 10sp chain. Both went on without issue.

I used a 2 speed front shifter for the rings, which does mean i don't have the granny ring, but there's no way i'll need a 24T ring anyhow, so not an issue.

The only minor complications were getting the tension on the front mech so it's not using the small ring, just needed my lad to help me there with an extra hand.
Lastly was chain length, with the standard cassette being a 28 cog biggest and this one being MTB and a 36, i needed to add in a couple of chain links, which wasn't an issue. Just needed a 2nd quick link in there.... But it's all done and smooth as silk.

Can't ride for another 7-10 days so won't bother setting lever positions etc just yet or bar angle, but will get them done before jumping on it.

Slightly excessive i agree the way i've done it, but it only cost me £23 to change all the bits and make it right, so no biggy there.

Looking good!

Honestly - get yourself a cable puller... One of the best tools I've got! Though it's not used frequently (like allen keys), once you have one, especially for stuff like this, it's invaluable!

Or just set the limit screws so the lower stop is over the middle ring?

Yeah may have worked too. I just preloaded the tension.
