Just put together a nice little winter Inbred, but it keeps throwing the chain.
Chainline looks OK, Surly front ring, some no name rear cog but plenty of life in it and a PC1 chain - as far as I can it's pulling forward in the drop out.
I have some grooved washer things that came with the frame that are supposed to stop that, but whilst I've put them on the only way that seems right I'm not sure how they are supposed to fit - maybe they are the wrong way around??
Any ideas before I give up and stick the chaintug in? Looks cleaner without it.
PC1 chain
ditch that ASAP. get a kmc.
Went down the Surly tug nut route and kmc chain. Binned the washers.
Ditch the PC1. Put a 3/32" width kmc on and a chaintug. Driveside only is fine unless you are massive.
One of the superstar cogs I used had strangely shallow teeth and would always throw the chain unless it was super tight. fine with a different superstar cog (bigger and much bigger teeth)
I also always use chaintugs, why faff when your nether region is at stake?
Also as above - I find PC1 wear quickly, even having to make adjustments mid ride. I just use any KMC 3/32 chain lying around now, usually 9/10 speed off one of the geared bikes.
depending on which version inbred it is you might have one of the taperlock ones? if so you just need to get the axle tightened up right. As usual with these things, post a pic and it will help, other wise you are just getting generic advice.
Think it is taperlock. Don't have a piccy to hand, but it has a groove inside the slot drop out and the seller supplied it with two washers with ridge that aligns inside the slot.. even typing that I can see it isn't helpful 🙂
I'll stick the tug nut back on, thats always worked for me in the past. Thanks all.
I have never been able to have a single speed Specific frame without chain tugs. Only frame I did not need them for was a GT backwoods as it was a vertical dropout.I think it is just the nature of horizontal dropouts.
I put 2 On-One chain tugs on my horizontal dropout Inbred. I think they're a fiver each
I had a slot dropout inbred for a few years and had the same problem with chain dropping which got progressively worse over the time I had the bike. Ran it with 2 chain tugs and tried different makes, a Surly Chain ring, White Industries Freewheel and SS straight link chain....not a HG geared chain. I had a bolt through DMR SS hub and had even centre punched dropouts to give the rear bolt washers something to grab onto. After every ride or so the chain would still loose it's tension and would very often chuck the chain.
In the end I found out that it was the rear triangle that was pulling over.....I did the Sheldon Brown Frame alignment check with chord and after 2 or 3 rides the stays would have pulled over 2 or 3mm.
This was the frame without a small Chainstay brace fitted in front of the back wheel so I always wondered if that had something to do with it. I did find it very easy to flex the back end....it is definately much flexierr there than the Cotic Simple I replaced it with.
Have a look on the Sheldon Brown Website and seach out the frame alignment pic so see how to check the straightness of the frame.
