Looking to get either an inbred or 456, but i just can't decide, not having ridden either..
Going to be using as XC with mates who all ride FS so needs to be fairly capable... but as i can only afford/allowed one bike i need to use it as a fast commuter with skinnies.. From what i can make out, the only real difference is in what forks i can fit, but the last thing i want to do is go for longer travel forks on a 456 and then find it not exactly rapid on the road... vs getting an inbred and wishing i'd gone for more front end bounce..
Help?
The 456 takes a slightly longer fork and weighs about 150g more. If your forks have lockout I don't see how choosing one frame over the other is going to make that much difference on the road. What do you ride at the moment, with how much travel? Are you happy with that much travel?

Type of bike has nothing to do with it. It's the RIDER than needs to be capable.
What sort of riding do you do? What Fork do you want to fit?
XC = Inbred
XC/Trail centres/AM = 456
AM/DH/Silly stuff = Summer Season
Although I know people who do all of that on any of those frames, myself included. What you need to do is BALANCE the frame to the forks to the rider! Then you'll ride pretty much anything on anything......
i used to run my 456 with Fox TALAS 100-140. jack of all trades 🙂
I had a 18" Inbred- first ride, came home and binned it. Whereas I now have a 16" 456- spot on. The main diff is a slight smidgen on the TT. Its a long frame as it is IMO.
I would see it as this:
- Inbred offers you a great rigid/commuter/Xc build
- 456 offers you a rigid/commuter/XC/rough and tumble ride, versatile and can be adapted to anything.
- Summer season (different steel and construction isnt it?) - is abit marmite for me. I didnt like it.
I've got a 456 with Talas 100-140 also. Built it up just before the summer last year and haven't ridden my Spec Stumpy FSR expert since 😉
I'd go for the 456 as it just does everything you'll need and if you decide to sell it as some point in the future (dunno why though) I suspect a 456 would now go better than an Inbred
Love my 456, fox vanilla r 140s I have never been annoyed by pedal bob so if it does it then I haven't noticed. Great ride, do anything bike.
I also reckon a 456 I think. Either with 130mm forks or travel adjust forks (IMO), but definitely with lockout (for road).
Ps. theres half a degree head angle diff as well- probably even more if you factor in the 4,5 or 6inch effect.
I have an inbred with 120mm fox forks on, brilliant!
I think an inbred with 120mm would be a fine do-it-all bike but then again best to get whatever is most appropriate for your off-road riding and make do on the road so maybe get a 456 if want a long travel fork and wind it down and lock it out for the road.
I have a Ti456 with 110-140 air pikes and took it for a ride on the back roads whilst we had all that snow and off road was impassable. I could,nt believe how much nicer it felt on the road with the fork wound right down so an adjustable fork with lockout would be first on the list.
I'd also buy it 2 stems and a couple of pairs of wheels if cash allowed. A short stem seems to make more sense with this frame off road but a longer stem (110-120mm maybe) will make you a little more stretched and flat for the road. A second pair of wheels shod with thin slicks and a road cassette will make a difference too - It might just be me but if I have to change tyres to ride the moment passes.
Brant's reply when I asked.
- Wheels on the ground and a bit gay - Inbred
- Fat chuffer and wheels off the ground - 456
I think he'd been on the wine at the time, mind.
I've had both and really there's not much difference - the 456 just feels a tiny bit slacker/slower/more stable. Aparently the published geometry figures are made up too so ignore those 🙂
Based on your requirements, I'd say the inbred - just a little bit more responsive for XC type riding. The inbred is more capable than most riders, particularly with a fork at 130mm
Cheers for all the comments, v.helpful...
yeah i'm on a 98 Kona Koa with p2's & v-brakes at the moment so kind of a suss virgin.. I love the geometry and responsiveness of the koa and want something a little more modern that has that same sort of feel..
(Also being able to actually stop in mud and wet will be a refreshing change)
So a 456 with the forks adjusted down sounds like the majority choice..
Gotta add my voice, 456 with travel-adjust fork will do pretty much all I ask of it.
A
i have both those frames, and for what you describe i'd go with either.

sooooo helpful! 😀
456 with Revs Dual Air U turn with poploc with Hope Hoops 5.1. Like some others have said my other bikes dont get ridden half as much as the On One. If I had to have just one bike the 456 would get it every time.
Agree with the 456 and different build 'kits' (I've a 456Ti after having a 456 after a 150mm FS), although go Ti if you can afford to.

Best "Inbred or 456?" answer yet.
Real answer: Blue Pig.

inbred for me - very capable when pushed, great commuter
