Machine down the lower cup height to fit a 10mm recess in a head tube. I can't see why not but just checking before I advise a pal.

It may be a bit hard to machine, possibly it's been hardened.

Yes - I did exactly this for the tandem - but it was a 30 mm insertion headset to 22 mm.

Why not get a headset that fits in this case?

It's only a lump of machined alloy after all.

Machine? A proper bodger would hacksaw or power-sand 😉

As long as you weren't removing the suport for the bearing it should work fine - you'll need to see it first to work that out though.

Ok, if it's alloy ignore my comment re hard. Just don't clamp it too tight in a vice when you hack a bit off, it may bend.

Would you not be better off getting something like this instead?

http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=51070

No machining required.

Heh! richamrs didn't know it is alu!

Nor does he know it would straighten as easily as it would bend?

Clamping would be the tricky bit, except with power-sanding.

Be about a minute's work for anyone with a lathe... Whereabouts are you?

PS nothing in the world straightens as easily as it bends 😉

cynic-al

Was going to suggest that Cynic-al's yer man. If he's not died from some bodge gone wrong (or weight of public expectation of a bodge going wrong).

Can you cover it in a wasp nest of carbon fibre for maximum effect? 😉

I saw a headset cup that had been to an engineering firm for cutting down. There was no way that could have been straightened after they had finished with it.
