Sorry in advance - I know the forum is choc full of posts asking about the standard Vat and duty situation when importing from the EU, but can't find this specific question answered anywhere.
If I was to buy a helmet from the EU (Italy if it matters), would I be right in assuming that it would still be classed as VAT zero rate? So I'd only need to pay duty? Anyone done this?
Yes that's right, helmets are zero rated for vat.
I bought one from Italy in Feb, the shop that supplied it didn't fill in the customs form correctly, so I was incorrectly charged vat when it came into the uk. I filled in a govt form that's is used to obtain a refund when vat has been incorrectly applied and sent it off and got a refund of the vat amount about 4 weeks later.
Great thanks Julian
I used to sell Bell/Giro helmets to shops and we were told that if it passes the UK standards then it’s zero vat rated. If not, t hen vat is applicable.
Some helmets are the same for various territories and pass multiple standards, others physically differ from one territory to another as they can be made lighter and pass some standards vs others.
Worth checking.
If you buy from the EU won't the strap buckle be on the wrong side?

It's ok, I normally go riding in a big girls blouse so I'll be used to it
