Im facing the usual family argument next summer as we pack the car for holiday, this summer we stepped away from the usual All Inclusive Hotel, and had a private villa, liked it so much were doing the same next year, part of the deal was I could take my road bike and explore, which I thoroughly enjoyed. The downside was that the journey to the airport was a bit of a squeeze, and id like to make that a bit more comfortable next year.
trawling round the Internet, searching for the various Bike Cases/bags available, Im struggling to find anything that will fit easily into a 2018 Mondeo Hatch, the boot itself is big, im happy enough to drop the small seat to put 2 cases there and free up a bit of room in the boot.
Case wise ive got it down to 2 options, the B&W Trapezoid shaped case, which by my measurements will fit, but there won't be a lot of spare room. Option 2 is from a start up company, based in the USA but shipping from the Far East, Post Carry Transfer Case is the piece of kit, ticks all the boxes, is a lot smaller than anything else ive found and also lighter.
Cost wise, im happy to spend a bit more to gain some family peace, the bit I have no idea about is bringing it into the Country, anyone know anything about Taxes/Costs likely issues that might be faced with this?
any advice, is warmly welcomed.
Any reason the bike can't go on the car for the journey? A boot or roof rack would be an easy solution.
*Edit* missed the bit about flying. Doh! But why can't you put the bike bag/box on a roof rack on the way to the airport?
Depending on where you're going, hiring a bike out there might be an easier option?
When I went to Whistler I strapped my bike (in a tarp-wrapped cardboard box) to my roofbars. Luckily it didn't rain..
Could it be cheaper to fit some roof bars?
A guy at work imported a wife from the far east, been nothing but a disaster for him. Ten years later, they have multiple children and he's pretty much given up drinking and doing anything fun to run around after her and the tribe of offspring. She seems nice enough when you meet her, but she really has him twisted round her little finger. Friday afternoon and you ask him if he's up for getting shitfaced and starting a barfight and he just mumbles some nonsense about how the wife has dinner waiting and then they're going to binge watch Sex and the City over the weekend. Bloody disgusting.
Roof rack for the case or bike box will be easier.
I bought a PSP for my son when they first come out from eBay from a seller from Leeds. When the PSP come it had been shipped from China and we had to pay £48 customs charges to the driver or he wouldn’t give us the PSP.
The seller refunded me though.
Duty on a suitcase is 5.2%, add that to the purchase price, add the shipping cost and add the admin charge for whoever is delivering it to you (between £8 for Royal Mail and £20-30 for courier) and add 20% vat to the lot.
Have a look if they trade on eBay, they’re getting quite good at this kind of thing now with the global shipping program, makes it really easy.
