I’m hoping to import a 18” steel MTB frame and forks from the States. Anyone done it recently? Who did you use? How much? How was it? Would you have done anything differently??? Ta..

Unless they have no UK distributor probably going to be more expensive once you pay duty, shipping, insurance and VAT on it - they you have to deal with warranty

You will still end up paying Duty and VAT on the import

Mick the expert on everything giving his usual good advice there.🤡

Not imported anything for a while myself but last time I did it was a right TIPA.

You get charged import duty on the price of the frame and the shipping and also have to pay VAT on it.

Then just to kick you in the balls they also charge you an admin fee for sorting out the paperwork which is part of their job.

LOL bitter experience of post between Aus and UK!! Basically don't send anything in from outside the EU!!

More importantly there are only about 5 people allowed to call me mick! One of them is my mother

I bought a frame direct from Chromag in Canada. After I paid them for shipping it arrived at my door 5 days later and I paid no import duty of any kind! I think it might have been a fluke...

US is most probably one of the easiest country's you can import from, item needs to be packaged well and make sure commercial invoice is included the duties & taxes will be based on this amount.

There are loads of company's that will assist, also shipping costs can be cheaper from the US so ask your supplier to give you a quote if possible.  If you search the internet you will be able to get an estimate of duties and remember you will pay vat.

Good Luck US is a doddle to ship from.

While I agree with that it still kind of stings how they seem to tax you on top of the tax...

So it's a private seller and the value might only be £30, so I'm hoping taxes won't be too bad. Anyone recommend any importers / couriers, I'm struggling to find quotes....

Found these on google

https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=import+from+usa&rlz=1C1GCEU_en__821GB821&oq=import+from+usa&aqs=chrome..69i57j0l5.3311j1j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

Based on value you should only be paying VAT.

Any of the US shippers really, just need it boxed as small as possible as it's charged on volume not weight at bike sizes.

Bike flights or ship bikes seem to be able to reliably get better prices on e.g. FedEx shipping than anywhere else.  They are the U.S version of parcel2go or parcelmonkey, just resellers.  The couriers in the US are getting more and more size restrictive and more and more expensive for anything which is larger than a book!.  IIRC bike flights quoted $135 for a bike box sized package - FedEx's website quoted $650.

You'll get charged more tax on the shipping than the goods.

it's a real pisser but there doesn't seem to be any way around it these days.

15 years ago it was easy to dodge it. Not any more.

I managed to get a quote of just over $50 but that was on guessed weight and box size, so I may pack up one of my spare framesets to get a better idea....

Where did you get that from?  That's cheap.  What were your dimensions?
