I'm going to fit 11 speed kit to my Trek at the weekend!

Ridiculous aren't I?

wait, did you ask STW first, how did you know what to get? Are you sure you will be OK?

😉 Just make sure you get the special retaining clip on right, wouldn't want to mess that up. You did get an 11sp spanner didn't you?

he hasn't even said whether or not it's for an enduro bike ("why yes, yes it is")

... and I bet he's left-handed

So how does that work out then? A triple chainset and a three and two thirds sprocket freewheel? I really can't keep up with all these new standards.

It's 4 sprockets on the back, but the chain is kept short. If you pay another £N+1, they give you the extra links, and you have a 12 speed.

Dashed cunning, those Shimanos... 🙂

I wasted a whole weekend obsessing over this and trying to get it fitted so I could ride it.

I hit the classifieds last weekend, and bought a shifter that seemed cheap. Then for the rest I found someone selling a whole set. I considered buying it all and passing on the original shifter but no, they split it for me.

The mech/cassette bundle arrived when I was in but the postie didn't knock so I collected it, then realised it was missing a bolt and direct mount adapter. No matter, original owner probably had a DM frame. So I called around the bike shops and on Monday found someone that had the adapter but turns out their bolt didn't fit. So I made a bolt (all this whilst I was meant to be working) and decided to try it with my old thumbshifter in friction to see if I could get in at least one ride before going away on Tuesday.

Well I never tried that because I discovered that the shifter had been posted and I'd accidentally sent it to an old address. Fortunately that was a block of flats with a concierge, so eventually late on Monday I get the shifter. Walking back through town admiring the as-new condition of the thing something doesn't seem quite right, then I realise it's a front shifter..

So most of a weekend wasted and I end up ordering from CRC anyway.

He's about to lose control - and I think I like it.

Oh man molgrips, I feel your pain.

Good luck with getting it all fitted real soon!

Fitted!

The actual bolts are hard to find, so the bodged one is on there for now, a proper one is on order.

It's all a bit weird though isn't it, coming from 9sp?  What surprised me is how differently it functions.  There's no top pivot - the upper parallelogram bit is fixed in position and only the lower cage is sprung.  I think this might be why the shifting is so incredibly crisp compared to 9sp - you don't have to unwind two separate springs with your thumb.  Cos of the shape of the thing the cable routing is different and I needed to remove the big loop at the back of a traditional mech.  That did end up making a fairly tight small turn because of where the cable came out of the stay and the fact that the cable entry point on the mech is pointing vertically upwards.  Doesn't seem to affect shifting though.

The clutch seems to help chain slap (from riding up and down the road) but I'm not expecting to need it since I didn't lose the chain with the old mech and I have a NW chainring.  It's not really noticeable when shifting single gears but when doing a load at once you can feel the resistance through the pedals.

What used to be the b-tension spring doesn't add tension to a spring any more, it just moves the parallelogram.  I wound it nearly all the way in since I have a 42T cassette which I think is the smallest available.

Even so the cassette is massive.  It's added about half a lb to the bike over 1x9 even though the chain is noticeably lighter than a 9sp one. It's probably just over half a lb less than the original setup though.

Originally fitted 3x9 XTR M970 with Dura ace thumbies, then went to 1x9 and still have the M970 cranks on. Added as many spacers as I could to improve the chain line. It's still as good as I'd expect with the same spacers although I've not got other 1x11 setups to compare with.
