...what would you go for?

I'm looking at a couple of 2009/10 Hecklers, a Yeti 575.....at that age and for that money the specs are actually pretty nice (Hope, Fox, XT)...26" of course.

I'm after something reasonably light and XC/Trail oriented, as a No2 bike really for bad weather/winter days/etc where my best bike might be better kept in the garage (ok, it's just an N+1 itch I need to scratch)

What else would you consider??

Prophet as it has a 1.5 headtube so your choice of forks should they need replacing is much bigger as it'll take a tapered, 1 1/8" straight or 1.5" steerer.

A mate has his 2010 Rocky Mountain altitude 10 up for sale for £400. 140 revs, 1x10 XT etc.
Or buy my blur 4x. 160 u-turn lyrics. 35lb. Ideal Xc bike 🙂

I loved my 2009 Yeti 575, so if you can get one of them for your budget I'd say go for it.
Had no trouble with the carbon chainstays either and I wasn't gentle with it.

Late 26in Zesty worth a look, great bikes.

I'd expect to get newer than 10-years-old for that budget, with careful shopping.

Thought I'd have a browse myself, I'd consider this and stick some offset bushings in it. Owned one myself for a good while, rides really nice and very versatile. Not that far off the geometry on current bikes.

I paid about that for my old Santa Cruz Superlight a couple years ago.. great spec with DT 240s, hope brakes, fox forks etc. (its actually for sale too). added a dropper and just had to buy new pads etc every now n then... loved it, just needed something more modern and the cash dropped into my pocket.

Does it have to be old and bling? You could probably pick up a Boardman Pro fs with 27.5” wheels for that if you looked round.

I sold the silver / green one (2015 model I think) that had revelations / 1x Sram GX, mavic wheels, guide rs etc on it for £600 a couple of years ago now. If you could pick up the model after that it had broadly the same specs but a slacker head angle and Pikes instead of revs.

I went for a prophet for £300, full bike. sold the lefty on for £200, now replaced with a set of 150mm revelations, bought for £100.
As long as the frame is OK, the spares are still around, the cannondale headtube will take a STD 1.5 headset, so will cope with tapered steerers no problem, just remember the external lower cup if you're sticking to straight steerer or the crown may foul the downtube.

That said, as above, the boardman FS second hand are coming in around your budget.

You may be able to source something like a Giant Reign/Trance or a Spesh Enduro/Stumpjumper too. All are excellent bikes with spare parts availability behind them.

The Prophet suggestion is a bloody good call too - although I've never ridden one they were far ahead of the curve geometry wise and mechanically very simple. The 1.5" headtube will cover every head tube eventuality too.
