...which would it be? I only have a bit of time and need some new cycling gear. Any locals have a city centre preference?

Cycle Heaven (both at the station or Bishopthorpe Rd) nice friendly and knowledgable staff
Bob Trotters are worth a look (now a Giant store)
and York Cycle Works too
all good in their own way , and while your at it pop into bike rescue projectfor a cuppa. You're never too busy for a cuppa.

Cycle Heaven will scoff at you if you want anything other than a hybrid.
Bob Trotters (known by many other names) are well worth avoiding.
Cycleworks - awesome.
Fulford Cycles - never used them but one of my mates who still lives in York uses them all the time and he lives right the other side of town, right near...
...Bike Outlet. Search for them on here and use them at your own risk.

Generally use Fulford. Richard is the boss (rides big bikes and 29ers), and Chris is the man who builds the wheels (rides mad belt driven single speed things). Giant and Orange mainly. Good place and very good at getting Orange to sell you the bits of the bike you want and not the bits you don't. They have the odd demo Orange in store too.

That said if you want kids stuff or commuter stuff Cycle Heaven is worth looking at and there's nothing wrong with Cycleworks. Bike Outlet? Well if you know exactly what you want and the have it - ie Hope sintered pads - then they are OK, but I wouldn't want to take advice from them.
