Go "Deadending" - Riding up a lane marked as a dead end. See where it takes you.

Ride a bike from the early 90s. Remember what it was and is all about.

Put some flat pedals on and go play in the City. Ride some drops and gaps, pull some manuals.

Ride a road bike. Realise that it is simply fun

Ride a BMX track. On a BMX or on MTB, doesn't matter. Have fun, ride the berms and jumps

Look for the local dirt jumps. Ask the locals, get involved.

Ride in the pouring rain, in the mud. Get covered in dirt and just smile.

Ok, this is many things:

(1) Look well ahead when riding into rock gardens too fast in driving rain
(2) Don't ride into rock gardens too fast in driving rain
(3) Avoid landing on sharp rocks when crashing
(4) Don't ride around for an hour with blood pouring out of your chin before going to A+E

Alternatively:

(1) Build up a bike from scratch - nothing can surpass this experience
(2) Don't bother trying to build wheels yourself - unless you don't mind the expense of various tedious 'failures' over the years, whereupon 15 years later you finally figure out this dark art - and build something round, true, evenly tensioned and strong, and wonder why it ever seemed like such a hard thing to do.

Whatever type of riding you want to do, do it, don't worry what others think as long as you are having fun!

Fail.

Look further ahead - not at your front wheel.

Brakes are for girls, anyone seen using them will be assumed a friend of Dorothy.

99% of riders have way to little faith in quite how late and strongly then can brake, and how much grip their tires do have if only they'd trust them.

Look further ahead - not at your front wheel.

Probably the best bit of advice, along with "Look at where you want to go, not at what you want to avoid or you'll hit it"

Others

- ignore people who think that because they have a better/more niche/etc bike than you, that somehow makes them cool/special/an outcast/etc" because frankly they're just lame.

- turn back and go home if you're not enjoying it (at some level at least)

- learn to bunny hop on flats

- learn to ride rigid

- don't brake in corners

- skids are for kids ( 😉 )

- don't eat yellow snow.

Buy a buff

Build your own bike

Build your own wheels

Ride how you want, if it's all about the shineys then admit that, but don't look down on others who's priorities are different (unless they're singlespeeders 😉 )
