if all of a sudden you were told that you could never cycle again, how would you feel.
how would it affect you, and what else would you do instead?

Hope that's not what they've said, ton..!

After picking myself up, I'd have a think about what I could do that would give me a similar sense of the pleasure that riding does, even if it's an entirely different activity.

You'll be fine. Get the docs to pull their fingers out, so to speak. 😀

I'd be pretty p!ssed.

Think I would take up rambling put on some red socks and wave my stick at other bikers out of spite.

Like most people on a Mountain Biking forum (I suspect) I'd be pretty gutted...

But then I'd quickly find out what my limitations were, and set about pushing them ASAP no doubt! 😉

Oh, and I'd investigate all sorts of other sports I could do to get my adrenaline fix that I would still be capable of doing.

I think I'd set about reading a lot of books. And then writing one.

In between, I'd (setadily) walk to the top of some hills and bask in the glory of fresh air and space. Just like riding a bike, but different.

Been giving this one some thought myself, currently recovering from a nasty Collar Bone break which has now required surgery to be plated and pinned. Currently 2 months off the bike (longest period since I was about 12 (I'm now 34)). I'm sure I will ride again, but at the moment given the inital complications I've been having a lot of 'what if' thoughts!

So far I've struggled to think of another sport that offers the enjoyment and freedom of riding either on/off road. I hate heights so base jumping is out, I might turn to distance swimming as I've always fancied having a crack at swimming the channel!

Was looking at this after my 2nd knee op...its on the mend now but seemed touch and go for a while.Biking is'nt the be all and end all.My life revolved exclusively around windsurfing for 15 years and at the time I could'nt imagine life without it.....i miss it occasionally but its no biggy now.
Theres always semi proffesional marshalling mate 😉

I have absolutely no idea - probably cry a LOT 😳 . . . Mind you that thread on model aircraft looked at least as expensive and time consuming and can be done from a wheelchair 😉

Still no sign of a comeback?

I think I would probably get quite fat. As above, find an alternative, might have to move to a country where skiing is a lifestyle option.

I'd get a dog and get out for long country walks most weekends. Seems like a decent trade if I had no option. I like my bike, but like being 'out there' even more. The bike just facilitates things.

I'd be more bothered about the underlying reason than not riding (by more I mean pretty much only).

having been a strong climber who had to stop climbing at a high grades 😉 due to knackered joints I was a seriously grumpy (insert expletive of choice) for quite a while I couldn't see the point of just biffing up diffs with the ron hill brigade.

I remembered that I used to love mountain bikes back in the day and got back into mountain biking. I Stay in touch with a few of the climbing crowd and I do miss the big mountaineering trips, but I've got a load of new mates through biking and a love of shiny things all over again.

If I had to stop riding I'd find another excuse to get out in the hills even if I had to drag myself there using only my lips or in a really bleak and dire future wear a bobble hat and brashers and be a flippin ramblynobber 😀

there's always something you can do to stay in touch with what you want to do, you just have to get a bit more inventive.

Out on a ride we crossed a road and met an old boy on an ancient tourer. Cap, old school leather cycling shoes, the works. Whilst chatting he toldus that cycling was the easiest way he could get about. He couldn't walk too well and didn't drive any more. I didn't ask why, but his enthusiasm was incredible. He must have been at least 70, maybe 80 years old.

My point is that I'd have to be just about dead before I'd give up. I've met 2 guys with one arm who rode, paralysed people can get handcycles, and if I could walk, I could bloody well ride a bike!

🙂

Ton, you could always get one of those 'heart in a backpack' things I saw on tv last week.

You'll just need a bigger backpack for tools, nutrition etc...

Pretty much what these guys think

http://www.vitalmtb.com/videos/member/Tara-Llanes,5779/k-shiz,14

I'd be very gutted and can't think that there would ever be any positive reason behind it so whatever happened there would be something crap in the background.

I'd find a doctor who rides bikes...

Unless it was due that affliction that affects so many car drivers - blindness. Then I'd buy a bling tandem and go looking for kind people.

Get a 'crosser and go wreck the trails for you lot. If I can't ride em no one can!

Seriously though, something involving speed I reckon.

If you couldnt ride your bike you probably couldnt do much in the way of physical sports - so you would have to find something that didnt use legs/balance/effort.

If I was that buggered Id go diving more - its not hard on the body and its not physical. Shame I live so far from the sea though.

Id end up miserable as hell and stalk STW to spread my misery.

Do hope you haven't been told that ton?

Years ago, I was told I could never run again and felt my world had come to an end. What kept me going though was training for the National 3 Peaks 24 hour challenge.

I have always liked walking and riding so that did help, although not the same obviously.

I'd be narked to say the least, but I'd accept it along with any decent offer for my bikes & do more of what I already don't have much time to do. ( sea fishing & errr, making model aircraft)

I would find the underlying issue and get a second or a third opinion or more if needed till I got the answer I wanted!

Got told 2 years ago that my tendonitis in my Achilles would never go away and that along with the advanced arthritis in my big toes, I should hang up my rugby boots and that I should never bother running again (ie no triathlons marathons etc).I am back playing and although can only do limited training (no runs, just weights and training sessions) I still get to give up on my own terms. It will be pretty soon, but it will be my choice, and that is the important thing.

I thought I was in this position a year or so ago, but without the option of doing other outdoor activities. I was quite severely depressed as a result.

If I definitely couldn't do regular stuff ever again then yup, wingsuit base jumping!

I'd be pretty peeved , i had to give up triathlon after a bad accident knackered one of my knees up (told by docs no running) i can't honestly think what i'd do instead to stay fit , probably swimming.

going for long walks is out , I do enough walking posting rubbish through peoples doors already.

I'd spend even more time learning to play my piano and sailing my boat.

Don't get me wrong, I'd miss it terribly, but there's always another hobby that would empty my wallet and give me some kicks.

I'd get some Huskies and take up mushing.

Or...
I'd get a longboard and get back into skating.

Or...
I'd play more guitar (except my hands are already sore).

Or...
I'd go off on a long walk.

I think I'd have to do something physical or I'd go madder.

Ton - what would you do?

Having had to pack up playing rugby at the yound age of 32 due to
a serious long standing neck injury I was beside myself so threw myself into MTB'ing for the adrenaline rush and to push myself physically. Have never been next to a rugby pitch since the day I retired I miss it so much. Guess it would be the same with biking however I would if I could have a long legged dog who loves long walks in the isolated hills or perhaps even a rowing boat as its anothet thing I love doing whenever I get an opportunity to jump in one and just row........
Just as an aside a couple of months ago in MBUK there were some seriously skilled MTB'ers who no doubt had been told 'never again' and I find them inspirational, limbs missing and all-where there is a will, normally there is a way.

If cycling was made illegal or something, I would just focus on my other sports, badminton and boxing mainly. Might try to take up running again but I'd be put off by the injuries. Maybe swimming. Sell bikes and get a car I think as well.

If I lost my legs or was otherwise confined to a wheelchair, I'd probably attempt to try disabled sports (prosthetic limbs maybe?) and such, get an xbox, and attempt to live on, but I'd probably end up killing myself.

4 years ago this was something I had to think seriously about. My energy was taken up getting better, so nothing left for activities of any sort.
Now that I'm fairly well again we bought a tandem and that gets me out and about when I can't manage my own bike.

If I couldn't ride for other reasons, then walking, skiing, horseriding and cakemaking would have to do.

Ton if this is really the case for you, then consider a tandem, however finding someone strong enough to captain it could be a problem 🙂

oh, and probably kayaking, but I might do that anyway

Mountain biking is my substitution activity for mountaineering.

So I'd find another substitution activity.

Hypothetically, if it was a cardiovascular problem, then I would do something less physically intense, that still got me out in the woods and hills.

god knows what i would do.
everything i have ever done has been sport based.
my mates are all sport based, be it rugby mates or cycling mates.
pretty poor that innit, when all your friendships are based around sport?

Wierd when you think about it,all my best mates are 'sport mates' too,but they're the mates who i have most things in common with and when i was in a car crash a couple of years ago and thought i'd never be able to do sport again it was those mates who kept me going and kept my chin up! Back doing all my sports again now,and a lot closer to those people too! Keep your chin up Ton you'll be back. 🙂

I think I'd probably just carry on unless the risks were very high (I don't have any dependants). If there was no way I could carry on I'd be gutted and probably look at racing cars again.

TOny, do hope that this is not a question your asking due to your curent condition.

If I was told I couldnt ride, then I'd dust of the walking boots and kit and still take to the hills fellwalking. I spent most of my formative years doing it and it stood me in good stead. Its not riding but it is getting out there.

Best wishes though mate.

Kinda happened to me 4wks ago. I stopped playing football (paid to play) at 25yrs old cos i caught the biking bug. Fast forward 8yrs and i had a 6-7yr old son who was football mad. Got me playing and coaching again.

1st season i got player of the year. 2nd season and i was half way through when i snapped my patella tendon completely. Knee cap somewhere up my thigh and after they had stictched everything back up it was pointed out that the tendonitus i have been battling for years in my patella tendons was a bit of an indication. So as the other knee is just as bad i am an accident waiting to happen.

My saving grace is that cycling is seen as a very good recovery exercise so i am hoping that I regain my love for biking (road to begin with) and dot miss the rough and tumble too much.

I have had a few quiet thoughts on the situation, but hell, what can you do.

gutted for you ton.
i have been here for a few years now you might of seen my post from before.
you might think that i stand a good chance of recovery from lymes disease but unfortunately i think it has done a lot of damage to the old groin. if i ride i get sick and my abdomen hurts in away that stops it being worth it.
physio and a surgeon reckon a mesh repair might sort it but i cant have that till i get the lymes sorted.
it's all might's maybe's and non of it is any time soon.
but hey all other areas in my life are going good. 🙂

I (almost) can't do any hillwalking or backpacking - which would still be my first choice. Hence I got into biking.

If that had to stop, I'd do a lot more kayaking/canoeing, and probably invest in another motorbike..

Having said that, I'm organising/supporting a couple of charity cycles with a girl who has Cerebral Palsy and is also profoundly deaf. While the distances involved might mean nothing to a lot of the regulars on her (although I sometimes wonder), this will be a massive achievement for her and is down, in part, to her sheer determination to overcome her disabilities.

I had a reoccuring injury which I thought might put me out of biking forever. I was surprised how pissed off and flat I became. It took around 3 months to adjust and luckily a year later I was biking again.
I wish I had this thread then with ideas, experiences would have helped. There is life after biking and occasionally the pleasant surprise of a return to biking; which I appreciate so much more now.

I was advised by my medical team at Kings College not to ride anymore, they told me that the stress would make my illness worse.
So i simply ignored them!!
I still ride my bike whenever i can and i still ride it in much the same way (though not as far or quite as often). I know it'll hurt me but i will not EVER give my bike up, and i'll just deal with it.

I do however do alot more fishing these days!
