Is it short cage you need? (Zee is only available in short cage).

If it is then yes i'd go Zee, if not i'd go SLX.

11-40 cassette and single chainring, so ???. Thought there was a wide ratio Zee too?

Won't work with Zee, Wide ratio on see is 36t max.

40t ends up with the mech cage breaking.

Ok cheers - wasn't sure if the numbers were max cog size or overall range of cassette. SLX then, unless the XT is worth the extra for any functional reason?

On a 40T cassette a Zee only just works, and thats on a hardtail. The best bet is a mid cage SLX as the different cable arm on the XT offers less clearance for the 40T cog than a SLX, which can lead to clashing chain/mech. XT will work, but in reality the SLX is actually a better mech for the job.

I'd get an M8000 XT mech.

There are many accounts of this working great on an 11-40t 10 speed set up, due to it being designed to work with a 40/42t cog.

I've run a zee with 11-40t (hope trex) for well over a year on my transition scout. I'm guessing a lot depends on the frame & amount of movement and the setup is critical.

I ran a Zee with a 40t Hope extender for a while before it twisted into a ball of metal. Swapped to an new xt M8000 rear mech and its been bloody amazing. Sweet 10spd shifting - so much better

I ran this for 8months and it shifted loads better than the 10s XT mech/RAD cage combo I had previously.

Plus if you decide to go 11 speed later, you're already on your way!
