Aaarrrhgghg!
I've got this friend, see.
His son has been on at him for ages to get him a road bike. Until now he's been borrowing his dad's (and adjusts the saddle to a stupid height) or moaning that his perfectly good SS MTB is a bit "slow" around town.
Fortunately, my friend knows a lovely guy who collects old road bikes. He asked him very nicely and got an ancient Raleigh: 451 tubing (*), horizontal drop-outs - what more could you ask for?
It was perfect.
The bottom bracket was perfect as well.
But, just to check if the BB was perfect or not, my friend's son decided to remove it, and replace with a Shimano.
Over the course of the next 2 days, he found out why having the right tool for the job is a good idea.
He also gained a much deeper insight into the meaning of the phrase "if it ain't broke, fix it until it is."
So, if you see someone riding around on a fine looking Raleigh, with 451 tubing, horizontal dropouts, a mashed up BB, and looking as though they've not spent enough time on their homework - give him a kick for me!
Thanks for listening.
(*) 85% of awesome, apparently.
