You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
I'm being lazy and can't be bothered to trawl every post and google stuff.
I want O/S style maps and the ability to upload GPX files to my iphone.
Can this be done at reasonable cost? What apps? What maps? (openmaps?)
I don't want to use it as a handlebar navigation I want it as a backup.
Example of use:
So I'm off on a ride I load in the route and the maps beforehand.
Put phone in backpack
Cycle quite happy without using it
Realise I've taken a wrong turn
Get out phone use it to get back on track.
WRT in mind?
I use memory-map. The app is a bit quirky for loading maps and gpxs but other than that it's good.
ViewRanger's pretty good on the iPhone - download OS maps through the app etc. Bear in mind that all GPS apps eat power on the iPhone, though I guess iPhone 4 might be better, so you'll probably want a back-up power source as well, plus some sort of protective case.
I use Viewranger (on Nokia but it is available for iPhone). You buy map credits and just download the bits you need so it isn't too expensive. It'll also run various free maps and international maps. Its a great app, works really well and has load of extra useful features. Drop me an email if you are thinking of buying it as I can send you a link for some free map credits.
WRT in mind?
No, just for when I go out and do a ride without a map.
Was out on Sat and had phone but no signal and no map with me and got a bit (not very much) off track 🙂
Viewranger is excellent.
If you want the battery to last longer when on then switch of 3G and Wifi.
That said using Cyclemeter yesterday with about 86% before the ride and it still running wifi and 3G I still had 20% left after 4.5 hours.
