Went for a ride up the Pentlands today on my gravel bike. Never spent any time up there so wanted to explore a bit.

Climbed up the hill towards castlelaw (could do with a granny gear for that) and at the top I turned left past the farm and followed the gravel path that takes you down the opposite way of the "great glen mystery" trail, with Glencourse down on my left.

Got the part with the two wooden seats, and instead of going down the path to the paved road next to glencourse I kept going straight, on a gravel track that isn't marked on any map. The gravel track ended and it quickly became an obvious singletrack path. I eventually realised i was trying to ride up a track that is meant to be rode downwards. I turned around and rode down it, which has given me an itch I want to scratch.

Based on that vague description, anyone able to idenifity what track it was I was on and how I can get to the start of it?

Sounds like goat track, you get to it off the main access track up from Castlelaw hill fort or Allermuir depending on which way you're coming from. Check out Trailforks for maps as that'll show you more clearly  https://www.trailforks.com/region/pentland-hills/map/

Yeah - I'd say Goat Track - and you're right, it's much better as a descent.

Great, thanks. Are the route grades on trail forks (blue, green) etc pretty reliable? Seems a good tool to use to start getting my feet wet.

Sounds like the trail named 'run sheepie run' on strava. It starts from the cattle grid on the castlelaw to dreghorn land rover track. Great in the dry but can be a bog on the wet. Friend's of Pentlands have been doing work to it over the last few years.

Goat track is a narrow sheep track above this.

Goat track aka run Sheepie run would be it. Better down than up , I’ve done a bit of work on it last 6 months to drain bits of it and FoP have put small bridges in. Utter mess in winter, pls avoid, a joy in the dry.

edit: if you want a ride let me know, I’m in Colinton

ah, we never had that name for it. Think I found it by accident exploring off the cattle grids one day - back in the day.

You can drop down into same area a little further towards Castelaw, that might be Dickson's descent..   ah, that's goat track. It's nice..
