Need to decide!
Ice rather than snow. In snow I’d say rear, ice I’m less sure.
What would YOU do?
Fixed wheel CX btw. Other tyre is a land cruiser.
front every time.
Front!
I'm surprised you'd even consider otherwise!

When a front wheel wipes out you stop yourself with your face
When the back washes out you stop yourself with your arse.
There is never time when you want your front to outgrip your back thats just crazy.
Interesting.
I've not run spikes before and i would like to.
Do folks run 2 tyres or just front?
Do folks run 2 tyres
Sensible ones do
But if you do only have one then front. Definitely
Front!
On the front, the rear skids out, you might get a foot down but that will likely slip too - result, a sore bum.
One the rear, the front skids out and you face plant into the tarmac, or a high chance of breaking your collarbone.
Had a few sideways moments last year.
Think ill try them!
Don't they provide less grip when there is no ice to cut through? I mean, metal on (damp?) tarmac doesn't sound like a good combo to me.

Works fine . Anyhoo it's a better combo than ice + rubber.

They have rubber as well you know 🙂
But they do sound like a tank rolling in to town on tarmac.
Why not both?
Two ice tyres bought. Thanks for the tips
Rear
No, it's front. I like my teeth
Rear, then ride backwards. Failing that put it on the front
Riding a bakfiets with a 20" front wheel and all your weight over the back is a lesson in understeer. The slightest of cambers (just on the road) leads to uncontrollably drifting towards parked cars..
Very glad this thread reminded me to put my marathon winter on the front last night before my commute this morning. -8.4 degrees and loads of ice. Back one will go on in time for the thaw no doubt
I don't think it's that clear cut. To be sure punch yourself in the arse and then in the face and then decide.
Oh everyone's a comedian eh! 🙂
Obviously I went front, but I'd been thinking back to previous winters (more in compacted snow rather than just ice) when I'd either decked it by losing the rear or felt the reassuring 'catch' of the stud tyre on the rear as the bike goes into a sideways slip. Feels like that's happened more often than it has by losing the front.
Only got the one stud tyre in the garage (cannot think where the other one went) so had a choice to make!
Unicycle is the answer.
Back. No, front. No. Stay in 😀

In 2010 I had an MTB with Schwalbe Ice Spikers fitted. great fun riding up a frozen river. Some odd looks from passers by who saw my riding along places they couldn't walk.
Very slow, very heavy but nothing stopped them.
