I think the 2005 SX / Enduro falls into the same category because they were the first properly good up and down bikes that could take a beating.

Probs a few more that I can't remember....

unfortunately i had started to discover cars/drinking and smoking at the time so never rode it,and sold it not too long afterwards 😳 🙁

i wish i had ridden it as it was a lovely bike (and had it fitted with first gen xtr to boot).

nowadays no chance in hell of being able to afford a bike like that 🙁

1988 Kona Explosif, if you can call it iconic. I still have and it gets an occasional outing.

04 s-works enduro, mbr gave it the best bike of the last 10 years a while back. Awesome bike

I had a couple of the mid 90s kona cinder cones.

Probably the most iconic would be my sunn radical. Bought from one of the UK team in 1998. Lovely thing, pedalled a bit strangely, but great to jump & thrash down Ricky hillsides.

In the same league would be it's replacement, a pull shock Schwinn straight 8.... foolishly sold it for next to nothing as it had a crack in the back end. In hindsight I should have saved it and made some new bits 🙁

Had a maverick ml7/5 for a while, great bike for long rides and tricky climbs. My dad still has one with 9 speed xtr, silly light wheels and maverick DC forks.

Lots of cool retro bikes posted but no many I would class as iconic. Mine below which were passed on long ago apart from the Roberts.

Specialised M2 Team Issue - paved the way for spesh mass produced aluminium frames
Amp Research B3 - that fork!

Not iconic but worth a mention is the Specialized S Works steel frameset which is rocking horse...

I have a 1990 grey/orange Marin Pine Mountain and 1992 orange/white fade Orange Clockwork. Not flash but iconic enough for both to have been rehashed recently.

Another is my 1993 GT RTS-1. Widely regarded as the first fully sorted full suss bike.

A Ritchey P22 Team. Fillet brazed by Tom himself, one of about 40 made. Not your run of the mill tigged frames...
I've had some nice bikes in my time but this was extra special.
Shame it was way too small for me.

1995 Orange P7 (Probably the nicest hard tail I've ever ridden, and cheapest)

2002 Spesh Enduro (Gave it to a mate last year who snapped it in half)

EPX - Australian designed Carbonfibre monocoque that folds. I had 2, the pic is of the frame of the one I sold. It folds around the swing arm (very small amount of travel - let's call it vibration suppression rather than suspension).

I think it's a great shame they never put them on the market. Whatever the price, they would have been worth it.

Santa Cruz blur 2002. 1st XL one in the country. Amazing bike apart from the tendency to eat bearings.

My 2nd favourite bike ever that was. My favourite was a 94 diamondback ascent se. Not iconic in anyone else's book but I loved that bike.

I think a lot of you are getting mixed up between "iconic" and "available to buy".

Not inc my current 29er I reckon I've done not to bad with bikes.

1. Muddy Fox Courier Comp, my first mtb. Bought from John Lewis.
2. Proflex 552 with flex stem (lethal)
3. Trek OCLV Y Bike. Died on trails beside Plockton, long winter walk home.
4. Proflex 857 (frame, bits from Y bike inc Pace forks) My brother in law still uses this bike in Oz.
5. Gary Fisher Sugar 3+ (now near 15 years old, still my commuting bike)
6. Specialized Stumpjumper Comp (2007) now my wife's ride.

So many bikes in last 25 years & I'm still shite 😆

I resisted the temptation to wheel out the 'unusual' specimens. 🙂

I nearly didn't post the Hammerhead, but it features in a book with the title "Cyclepedia, a Tour of Iconic Bicycle Designs", so I thought ok. I agree it is more unusual than iconic though.

I'm not sure about the EPX - as a late 90s design it's probably more before it's time than iconic.

But the Moulton definitely is iconic.

I'm sure I'll get agreement from more than a few that a Pompino is iconic, at least in this country.

So a Ti Pompino must be too.

Stumpy Mk1, I didn't see another Mtb for over a year, I still have my mk2 and it rides well. Game changer
On One inbred SS, such simple, cheap, great alround bike. Great version of a brand that was a game changer.
Cotic Soul Mk1 again did what it said on the tin - not many do.
Blur 4X, still have it, you won't believe how many people want a go and then rave about it.

From the Merlin USA made batch with the bend in the seatpost tube which Jeff couldn't do in his shed and as he said it was his ultimate bike.
It has a Fat forked and has a 4" fat front option as well as a 29er running 35mm rims front and back.
Plus I've Rohloff'ed it but I have got a single speed rear wheel if I fancy going back to those days.

Does a Kona Explosif count? One of the first available in the Green paint with yellow splatter. It was the late 80's mind.

Edit, gone back to the OP and discovered that post 1 and two has bike I once owned. The Pace RC200 (i had three) could be considered iconic like the Explosif but it could never be called comfortable. It was for racing only.

that palmer spesh wins. a mate of mine was still riding his until a year or so until he cracked it in whistler. spesh had him a replacement frame within a couple of days.

Klein Mantra, bought new in 1997 for £1,500, owned for 15 years as my only bike, often 60 mile rides out on a Sunday.... then I went on a course that tought me how to actually ride a bike off road. Mantra scared the pants off me first time out, stripped it for parts and sold it on. I loved that bike, right up until I did that course.

You see the Mantra's suspension only worked if you were sitting down. If you stood up, it stopped. I liked that action when I bought it. Meant it was comfy sitting down, yet acted like a hardtail standing up.

Today on a mountain bike you hardly ever remain seated for long. My first ride out after being shown how to use a bike properly, and not just ride, well... Standing up for some roots and a corner, I had the temerity to brake. Not only does the suspension on the Mantra stiffen up when standing, if you brake the bike loses 5" off the wheelbase. You try riding a full suspension bike that stops being a suspension bike just when you need it, and that folds itself in half when you apply the brakes.

I have an Overbury's Pioneer.

Beat Kona and everyone else to sloping top tubes by a couple of years I think?
