Has anyone ridden the Icknield Way between Streatly and Great Chesterford recently?
Is it rideable on a CX bike with 45c tyres?
Any sections you really like?
I'm free this weekend, and need to start in London and end up in Peterborough. So I was thinking of riding out on road to intersect the way N or NW of London, riding east along the trail, then getting back on the road somewhere after crossing the A1 to finish the ride up to Peterborough on the road again. But not sure if it's practical.
Have you checked Strava ?
A few of my club mates did it about 4 years ago and most of it was on road, so they took road bikes.
Strava will throw routes and speed up, you should get a good idea of terrain off there.
Can't talk about the bit you're after, but the Icknield Way Trail off road bits I cycle on regularly, between Great Chesterford and Newmarket, are all bone dry and running nicely. Where nicely is relative, as some bits are concrete hard and a mass of horse hoof divots, or hideously overgrown, but mostly, it's running really nicely.
i ride the part of the Icnield Way that is Peddars Way including last night, as above rock hard, which means that the tractor and horse traffic has left it pretty bumpy (but fun) and it is overgrown in places.
I would take a pair of leg or knee warmers or wear long socks just so you can pull them up where there are a lot of nettles.
Hmm. Will see if I can get some leg warmers in time.
Thanks for the info.
