hi guys , am riding 1st gen mojo hd. size med as I am 5 6inch with long legs and short reach
I ride downhill style enduro stuff but mainly like to ride up - local DH traisl and moorland stuff - a real mix so this style of bike is perfect - with the rear shock on trail mode flowy single track still fun ....BUT
this bike is REALLY short and head angle 67.5 with 160mm fork ive got on it -

wondering about going a bit more modern coz on the steeper stuff - eg steeper bits of 'rooty ruts' / blacks at BPW does feel quite 'over' the front end

seems hard to find any reviews comparing ibis with other bikes; HD 3 sounds more playful on the mag reviews ive seen / HD4 more stable for charging straight down stuff. do't wanna buy and HD 3 which I am kind of thinking about and find its no different to what ive got - not a lot of options to try stuff anywhere near where I am living
any one had experience of more than 1 of these 3 generations?

any musings gratefully received
(also thought about nukepoof mega 275)
paul

I’ve owned all of the different variants you mentioned above, currently on the hd4.

It was a while ago when I went from the hd to hd3 but from memory they were quite similar to each other, the hd3 just changing wheelsize, tweaks to the angles and reach and keeping up with modern standards, the original hd rode great anyway so why change it too much. Having said that, The hd3 was an incredible all round bike, it did everything really well. I had mine for 3 years and is one of the few bikes I’ve been sad to see go.

The hd4 was a big change from the hd3. You’ve already read about the differences by the sound of it, it’s not as good going uphill as the hd3 but way better going down, it’s definately an enduro focussed bike but it’s also a bike I’m happy to ride all day, I just accept it’s a bit more work than the 3.

Overall, My favourite to date is the hd3. you can still smash downhills on it but it then flies back uphill as well. They’re quite short by modern standards though. I was 5’8” with short legs on a medium and often felt I’d be happy on a large. The cane creek shock wasn’t great either until j tech sorted it for me.

heh squealer, thanks for your thoughts
did you ever consider fitting an angle set to the hd3 ?
also did you feel the hd3 was better at descending than the original HD or much of a muchness?
are the later versions more 'flickable' ie all this short chainstay stuff? I looked at the stats on the website and seems the chain stays get shorter each time - I have no idea how much difference this makes in real terms but do like hopping off stuff etc
sorry if I am boring you .... really like my HD so kind of thought I might stay with the brand though am a total cheapskate so am not looking to buy one new , so a lot more hd3 in my pricerange!!
thanks again
paul

I have not spent huge amounts of time on a HD3, but own a HD4.  I completely love my 4, it does everything brilliantly.  The only thing I wish was it was a touch longer (Hd5 ticks that box) I am 5’9 with short legs and run a Large HD4 with a 150 dropper.  It’s a fantastic bike, I had mulled over upgrading to the new HD5.  But have decided to wait until next year now.  In terms of comparison to the HD3, it’s as you have read really.  The 4 is definitely a bigger hitting bike, it climbs well (very well) but not as spritely as the 3.

I had an hd3. Never ridden a 4 but I'm shorter than Russy and was on a medium but it was very short.

I put a 1 degree angleset and 160mm forks on it.

I loved the way it pedaled and pumped, but I built up a cheap hardcore hardtail that was much longer and it just highlighted how short the HD3 was.

I couldn't get away with a 150 mm dropper in the medium, and 125mm was a bit too short.

I'd buy an HD5 or Ripmo Ali without a second thought. The HD3 was just a little short and tall.
