I think I'm starting to really enjoy riding again and its due to this Orange that I've bought.

I've been up the monster trails and done the haggis and the gulley monster.

It climbs much better than I expected which is a bonus.

It's very comfy and I'm happy with the riding position as its perfect for me. I feel like I could ride it all day long its that comfy for me.

The only part of the ride I struggled on was a tight hairpin which due to the length of it I couldn't do it in one move.

Other than that I very happy with it.

Happy trails.

Renton.

From what i have read on here..... hooray. Nice that you have found a bike you like.

Improve your skills and getting round the switchback should become achievable too.

Do they still have the north shore stuff at Fochabers?

Nice one renton. I always enjoy the Moray Monster trails too. Maybe those old school trails just suit our old fashioned bikes 🙂 Have fun and keep on posting.

Glad you are enjoying riding again. However if you sell this before xmas i will start a petition (using my incredible influence) to have you removed from the forum 😀

Seriously I can see myself keeping this one.

I may change the wheels at some point but am just going to enjoy riding it for now.

It's still a heavy bugger though.

Yay! glad you're enjoying it again Renton, obviously the Giant jsut didn't suit you, no matter what the on-paper numbers might say, there's nothing like a bike that feels right and makes you smile... but... uh oh, is this some doubt creeping in

It's still a heavy bugger though.

😆

Just ride it and smile, the weather is on the up, and you've got all summer to wear those wheels out before upgrading.

It's still a heavy bugger though.

Let's say, for the sake of argument that it's 5lb heavier than whatever dream bike you eye up next.

A quick Google suggests that 5lb of fat contains around 17,500 calories*

My Garmin** recons I burn something like 500 calories in an hour of enthusiastic cycling.

So, just rude the thing for 35 hours and the combined weight of you and the bike will be the same as if you bought that dream bike 🙂

* probably wildly inaccurate
** ditto

No wonder the classifieds are quiet, Renton content with his orange, and Hora hasn't advertised his Road Logic yet

I must say that there is something strange about Orange bikes. They are pretty much impossible to justify on an internet forum. I'm sure lots of people dismiss them as old fashioned and overpriced and never try them. Fair enough, maybe they are, but man they can put a smile on your face can't they?

roverpig you are absolutely correct! There is something a bit special about that them and it's very hard to explain it to people.

A great feeling, I find it is easy to love a bike and riding it at this time of year. You cant beat riding dusty trails and watching the sun go down on a evening ride.

One of the best riders I know has an Alpine as his bike. He ascends everything faster than anyone else, and he descends everything faster than anyone else too. On paper its weight and slack angles alone should discount it as a climbing machine and its antiquated single pivot technology should see it being destroyed on the descents by the super tech, multi-linkage machines of today.

Whilst I would argue that ultimately the rider is the most important part of the equation - and that a lot of the money we spend fettling around on our bikes (myself included) would be better spent getting some lessons and losing some weight - there does seem to be something about those bikes. I've often heard the argument that they've spent 20 years perfecting one method of delivering the suspension, rather than chopping and changing (similar to the Heckler), and maybe there is something to that. Whatever, I'd certainly consider an Alpine were I in the market for a long travel slayer (which I'm not, sadly)

Just as another update on this.....

To be honest I can't see myself buying another bike for a long while now.

I'm converted to 29er.

I am absolutely loving this bike. It is a heavy bugger and it shows up my lack of fitness on climbs but point it across or down and its immense. Strava Times are dropping daily and its just so confidence inspiring.

It's true that the 5 29 does have a bit of flex and under my considerable bulk you can feel it more but it's not in a bad way at all. A lot of it is down to the wheels. These will get upgrades when funds allow.

Cheers all.

Happy trails.

Steve.

Did you ride the Moray trails on it the other day? If so, how did you find it on the climb up to the monument? It's hardly an epic climb, but it's the sort of slog that I find a real pain on a bike that can't climb.

I didnt go in the end as had to go into work.

Ive got a little 8.5 m loop set up around Oakwoods that I did instead.

Dont get me wrong its good at climbing, it doesnt suffer with getting hung up on roots etc like the Trance did.

Its the weight and my lack of fitness(had a chest infection) that make it a pig. Its definatley a sit and spin type of bike rather than a stand up and mash !!

I didn't go in the end as had to go into work.

I hate it when that happens 🙂

Its definitely a sit and spin type of bike rather than a stand up and mash !!

I pretty much never stand when climbing, which is a good thing as I tried it on the Five once. Once was enough. It's a good workout that's for sure 🙂

On the plus side I'm getting out and discovering more and more trails around Oakwoods though.

There is some seriously steep stuff in there.

I think in your last statement you hit the nail on the head about haters of fives.....you can't stand up and mash the pedals, it's a sit and spin bike on the climbs.........and great on the descents......I am sort of wishing I just had two MTBs now, a Five 29er to go with my Five 26" AM........the 29er for XC riding getting comfortable miles in and leave the 26" set up for uplift days.....
That and of course aesthetics, some folk get it, some don't!
I've got the shorts and riding Jersey too yet to get the socks 😆

To me it feels like my old five spot did fit wise. Now Ive got the same feeling in a bike with newer geometry and tapered headtube etc.

I wouldnt class the 5 29er as an xc rig though !!

I find standing up and climbing fine on my 5...to me it almost feels like a hardtail compared to my anthem..
Maybe it's just the CCDB CS that makes climbing and standing not an issue.
I don't always use the CS switch as I just forget about it..

That's not right. The five29 is a monster truck, amazing for uplift days. The five would be better for Xc days out.

Unless you're thinking if the Segment, which would be ideal for Xc riding.
