What is the official shimano designation for "just a normal shifter that doesnt connect to a brake" I am watching a couple of 11 speed shifters but will not be using shimano brakes in the build. As lots seem to have just half the bar mount, can I just nick the other half from an old shifter or brake? Thanks.
'Bar mount'.
No sure what your fix refers to but probably not - the bar mount clamp is part of the top half of the shifter. You can buy these separately but they cost nearly as much as a shifter!
KCNC make a bar mount that is compatible with XTR & XT I spec II.
'Bar mount', '22.2 clamp', 'band-on' or any combination of the 3.
The ones that look like they have half a bar mount are actually Ispec II and cannot be mounted individually.
Bar mount, but have seen some shops calling them "band on" or "with clamp"
I-spec is a disgrace, really - they've gone through I-Spec A, B, 2, II and now EV in about ten years - most of them are not cross compatible, and for the most part if you buy a shifter of one type, you're stuck with it.
Compare to SRAM, who have droppers, brakes and shifters all using the same system for years, and if you want to use a different brand of brake, you just put the clamp back on your shifter.

absolutely this.
Was a good idea but far too many versions

Same with their bottom brackets. 44mm 16 notch has been standard for donkeys years, but now XT is 41mm and XTR 39mm. The XT comes with an adapter though, which takes it up to 46mm, meaning you need the SRAM DUB tool 🤦♂️
I love I spec, but I use Hope tech3 brakes, otherwise avoid at all cost.
