Came across this a while ago.
After umming and arring for a while I approached the owner and pointed out that his bars were on upside-down and the wrong way round. He stared at it for a while, looked at my bike for a while, stared at his bike again and then told me he prefers it that way and has always had his bars like that.
(I may have posted this before, but can't remember.)
Of more pressing concern is SPD-Rs on an MTB…
The 70s called and want their fizzy bars back.
So his brakes are the wrong way around as well?
Yes.
He had obviously not long got the bike, taken it out of the box, bolted on the bars without thinking about it and gone riding.
That shifter looks dodgy and all
Clearly the bars are a disaster, but the shifter!!!!
he prefers it that way and has always had his bars like that.

Looks like he’s put the stem on upside down, without taking it off the bars first

I know, why does OP feel like he's entitled to go around telling people how to arrange their bikes...?
Reminds me of that sci-fi film where a pair of astronauts go on a year-long journey to explore the other side of the sun, but crash back on earth after only six months.
They find everything has become weirdly messed up, just like this bike, in their time away. Freaked me out for years.
Shifting must be fun.

Or maybe the guy was just embarrassed about his lack of knowledge, said the first thing that came into his head when confronted by a stranger in public, and then changed things when he got home?
My first modern mountain bike came to me with a set of easton bars fitted back to front. It actually worked great- the bike was pretty short, the bars were too narrow, so it meant I was naturally in a big round-armed elbows out position. But I had to replace it cos of people telling me it was wrong

And how’s that different from toxic masculinity?
Does he ride trials?
I think OP got the 2nd best response really, 1st being "oh thanks", 3rd being f-off. Personally I'd probably have left him to it, chances are both our days would be better. Definitely if it were a woman, would feel too mansplainy no matter which way you do it.
They aren't upside down. Are they? Just back to front and the levers upside down??
I used to run on one Mary bars upside down on the singular when in SS mode. Gave more wrangle-force when hoiking up silly gradients

At least he got the upsweep bit right 😂
Love that the shifter is upside down and on the wrong side. Must be slightly awkward to use.. but I guess if he "prefers it". Cute.
I used to run my mary bars upside-down as I found them more comfortable alas I had no shifter to get wrong though

And the brake levers the wrong way round. Hope he doesn’t try to do a skid.
@firestarter bit close to home?
How is refusing to admit that he's done something wrong, to save face, whilst endangering himself and making himself seem like an even bigger fool anything but toxic masculinity?
Toxic masculinity? Are you for real , I thought you were taking the pi55 **** me
Definitely if it were a woman, would feel too mansplainy no matter which way you do it.
There's a really fine line to tread there. I mentioned it in another recent thread about forks on the wrong way round as well.
I've seen people with helmets on back to front (less so now that most helmets have ratchets etc at the back) and I've seen one person wearing cycling shorts inside out.
As a general rule, unless it is a critical safety issue, I'll not say anything. Same with trying to remonstrate with a motorist, that will never end well. Very rarely is anyone going to back down and say "I'm really sorry, you're right, my driving was shit there and I endangered you, please accept my apologies and I'll be more careful in future". You're just going to get a mouthful of abuse.
Same here - unless you are actually coming from a definite position of authority like you're the owner/mechanic in a bike shop when that bike is brought in.

Whatever you're used to is the right way round.

Cos none of that's necessarily deriving from masculinity? Doing stuff wrong and not admitting it isn't a purely masculine thing. Feeling put on the spot and reacting with the first thing that comes into your head likewise.
We saw a guy riding round the road at ladybower yesterday with his forks on backwards. He had his young boy riding behind him. Hope he doesn't teach him bike maintenance

Never heard of it - will have to see if I can download it....
