Im obsessed with bikes and rather than this seeming a humblebrag, its actually a plea for guidance and a little help.

I work hard in a job i dont enjoy, and i am comfortable enough to live in a tiny house and support my daughters through college.

My garage is small and it contains bikes for me and my daughters. I currently have my bikes which are

PP Shan, 650b, 160mm Pikes

Cube reaction carbon rigid bikepacking bike

YT tues 26 DH bike

Cube stereo 160 650b trail/enduro bike

Orange Gyro 29 with a -2 angleset 120/110mm

I also have road bikes, so when you add the kids and my partners bikes, the place is rammed with bikes. I love it and they are all ridden and really well maintained.

However space is at a massive premium. I also have motorcycles, so i was wondering could 1 bike replace the 3 FS bikes above? The Cube, Orange and the YT?

I ride Snowdonia, go CYB, Penmachno, Marin and holiday in the alps.

This year, we left our DH bikes at home and i rode my Shan HT and loved it. The YT is flattering but a little too capable for my mincing.

So how can i rationalise this overstock of well loved bikes? I was thinking an Aeris am9? Intense carbine? Keep the cube stereo? Whyte s150s? Any help greatly appreciated

Ian

This is STW, so the obvious answer is...

... get rid of the road bikes.

The road bikes are making the conservatory unuseable, but they arent part if the garage problem.

But a further symptom of my illness

If the YT is a bit big for your riding, then presumably the stereo 160 will do everything you need the dh bike to do? That's the obvious one to give up I reckon.

....however, the YT is worthless due to wheel size.  awesome still for DH and freeride/ alps .

keep it and ditch the cube!

I agree, the YT is worthless... If you want to give it away I'm sure I could find a home...

I need to get rid of two. If i kept the valueless YT and got rid of the orange and the cube, then the yt would be my only FS. Leaving me the Shan for everything trail, and two bikes for alps and Antur.

That may work

If it were me, I'd sell all three of your suspension bikes and buy something like the AM 9

Though I never had as many bikes as you, went through a similar process in the last few years. I'm now down to 2, 160mm Bronson V2 and a 400 quid calibre flat barred road bike.

Bronson covers everything from XC bimbles uop the river to gondola and uplift days. Calibre stitch all the utilitarian stuff and family cycle path rides.

It's quite refreshing to be honest.

Im pretty sure it will actually be liberating when i get a plan. I also have a tone of spares so i could get an AM9 as frame only..

Keep the Enduro bike, the Shan, 1 road bike and ditch everything else.

Firstly, well done for recognising that you have a problem.

Secondly, you're right you could chop out those three FS bikes and replace with one.

Keep the HT if you love it, nobody should ever have just one MTB anyway, in case of mechanical issues causing them to miss a ride.

So putting specific brands or models aside for now, what I think you need is a 140-150mm rear travel 29er which pedals very well. Probably with a 160mm fork.

This will cover 90% of the spectrum of riding the other three did, with most of that missing 10% being the more rugged DH tracks.

You mention the Whyte s-150, which sounds like a good shout and I think can be had at reasonable prices. I have an Orange Stage 6 which would also be very good at covering the trail bike side of things - they are pricey of course but expect deals with end of model year and revised frames likely any time now.

^that sounds like the best option. I'm space limited as well and as much as I'd like another bike to do something else with I'm probably going to just get a pair of wheels and use an existing bike.

I'm not seeing a problem. All I can see is that you have a good cross section of bikes that give you the right tool for the job.
You have every right to indulge your passion. Doing a tough job likely means you need this passion.
I suspect having to select a compromise tool for a specific job would be dissatisfying to you and probably spoil the ride e.g. that uplift day would have been perfect on the YT, that trail was great I wish I'd ridden it on my Cube etc etc.
No value in second hand mtb bikes.
Keep your DH bike for 3 yrs and then get rid only if not used at all.
Everyone should have an HT so no discussion there.
You bike packing bike is an investment in your future, so keep it.
That leaves two trail bikes that totally compliment each other.
Well done you for you excellent choice of bikes.
Now apply that intelligence to storage solutions e.g. DH and bike packing bikes stored elsewhere as used least.
And yes, I am just like you. I have a fat bike too! I did sell my alps bike because I was losing the love, and it had good value thx to brand new frame (warranty claim).

Replacing the 3 fs bikes with a hardcore ish fs 29er that still pedals ok seems a good option. 140-160 ish travel with something like a 65 degree headangle and suitably steep seat angle for efficient pedalling.

Alternatively (and probably cheaper) just keep the Cube FS and get rid of the YT and Orange and just see how that works for you?

Just ride the Shan HT for anything where you don’t need fs per se and the Cube / a n other 29er fs bike for everything else.

AM9 and S150 are quite a lot of bike for that 29 option - I think I’d want to test ride a few options on both gnarly trails and pedally trail centres to get w feel for their all round capabilities.

I'm sure I've read about the S-150 actually coming up short on rear travel, and it's usually specced with a Pike or Rev at 150mm rather than Yari or Lyrik.

Seems like a textbook long-legged trail bike to me.

Carbon one reasonably priced here if medium... https://winstanleysbikes.co.uk/whyte-s-150-c-rs-29er-2018-bike

What you need is a garage extension. Could you put in a second floor?

I didn’t see an ebike listed there.

Get rid of everything else and get a YT Decoy.

Have you ever sold a bike before OP?

Or do you keep them all?

I have sold a couple, but as i consider i buy wisely, none of them are lemons.

They all fit me and are all great at their roles. If i had the space i would keep them all and ride them all.

I had thought that the replacing 3 FS bikes with one may free up space and get me a more modern geometry all purpose bike. As identified further up, the DH bike is worth the same as a bix of jaffa cakes, even though its ace i will partially disassemble that until its alps time. It can live in the loft. My daughters can go there too.

So maybe move the cube and the orange on and build the Stumpjumper 🙂
