My so called super duper IGSport 50 has given up the ghost 5 days after the return date expired!

I need a bike computer that does the following

* Records distance and time and route taken. Preferably by GPS means rather than wheel sensor.

*Will upload to Strava or some other recording system automatically, or after no more than a couple of button presses.

*Will accept GPX routes and allow my to follow them giving proper direction arrows. My Garmin eTrex 30 will do all this but not the Strava upload, and it's clunky to use.

*Doesn't have a phone app that keeps crashing or eating battery life.

Fits onto a Garmin out front holder.

So what is out there?

Garmn Edge Touring does most of that. For Strava, you plug it in with the USB cable, go to Strava.com and Upload from file, select the files and go. Bit more than a couple of buttons, but not much hardship given it'd need charging anyway. I do mine once a week.

It's not a brilliant device and has occasionally reset itself to factory settings, which is annoying as you have to customise the navigation options quite a bit to make it work properly. The factory default navigation is dreadful. Best of a bad bunch unfortunately and better priced than anything else when I was looking. Be interested to hear if anything better has come along for sensible money.

What is your budget?

Apart from the garmin out-front holder bit, it might be worth having a look at the Lezyne range. There is a new one that has just been announced with a larger screen etc. There seems to be a good range of sizes/price points & features out there.

I've recently bought a Wahoo Elemnt Bolt and so far it is proving just the ticket, compared to my very glitchy & frustrating Garmin Edge 500. It will do all you require above. There is a phone app, but it has proved to be no problem. It is used to configure the device & sync routes etc. But, once a route is on the device itself, you don't need the phone to remain connected at all.
Uploads to Strava occur before I have even got the bike back in the garage after a ride!
It will fit on Garmin mounts, but you need to shave a tiny amount from the mounting clips (on the mount, not the device). The mount will still work with Garmin.

I'm sure others will recommend Garmin, but after the poor experiences I have had with my Edge500, I won't be going back to them any time soon.

No idea on budget. Not keen on £500 but was expecting £200/300.

I have the ability to create my own routes in GPX format using the now defunct Memory Map software. (Far better than the modern equivalent!)

I would like to be able to download these routes to the unit, and then follow them with just a simple arrow indicating turnings, or straight on as my eTrex does.

Really I think I'm after a combination of computer and eTrex, if such a thing exists.

I am not sure about other devices, but with the Elemnt Bolt, I think you need to use either ridewithgps or Kamoot to create routes that will give you turn-by-turn indicators.
If you use other websites/programs you will still get a on-screen route display, but you won't get the turn notifications.

I used to use gpsies.com which does allow you to put in turn points on a route, but I am yet to see if it works with the Elemnt Bolt. I haven't bothered trying.

There is a very in-depth review of the Elemnt Bolt (and other devices) on the DCRainmaker website, here:

https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2017/03/wahoo-elemnt-bolt-in-depth-review.html

If you like Garmin, something like the Edge520 might be suitable or the Edge520 plus, which has more sophistcated mapping options.

Not sure where to get them but check out Bryton. I have had one for 5 years and its rock solid. Battery still lasts, easy to use, cheaper than Garmin.

Yeah Garmin 810 will do all of that. Uploads to strava automatically via bluetooth so if you have your phone on you and click save ride on the device it'll be sitting there in a few secs. Saves plugging it into a PC.

Shame you asked today, they were selling Garmin Edge 820s for £200ish yesterday via the Amazon Prime day stuff.

If you ponder a 520, try and make sure it's a 520 Plus, very similar price, better mapping from what I understand.

Element Bolt needs Strava premium, which I don't have.

Wahoo Elemnt Bolt only needs Strava for Live Segments (as does Garmin). All of other functions work with regular Strava.

Garmin edge touring has a range of very annoying bugs.

Worst is that if you put too many points into your gpx route it will fail to do turn by turn navigation and instead just show the route on the map. 200 points seems to be the limit (????). I use gpsbabel now to cut down the number of points.

It also seems to insist on displaying the number of calories rather than the temperature. No idea why. I can change it but next time it has changed back.

I wouldn't get another one.

Thank you. I've misread it. Looks quite interesting.

Anyone using a garmin device shouldn't need to do any manual uploading to Strava.

If you are synching to Garmin Connect you just give permission to that app in Strava and it auto loads. I have mine linked to Strava and Endomondo, I never need to manually load anything.

In Strava you set this up under "My Apps"

Yeah, Strava Premium for the Elemnt Bolt is only for live strava segments. I don't have premium and it works fine.

Worst is that if you put too many points into your gpx route it will fail to do turn by turn navigation and instead just show the route on the map. 200 points seems to be the limit (????). I use gpsbabel now to cut down the number of points.

@oldnpastit - have you tried using gpsies.com? There is a setting to 'evenly space points' or similar. It was a 'sort of fix' that enabled my Edge 500 to sometimes follow the breadcrumb trail as opposed to never follow the breadcrumb trail.

Might be worth a go.

Wahoo Elemnt/Element Bolt does all you ask. I have the Elemnt, as aeroness is not important to me but slightly longer battery life and slightly biggerer screen is, it's excellent

Well things have moved on apace here.

I couldn't get the unit to talk to the app whatever I did. Even uninstalled the app and reinstalled it made no difference. That's why I thought everything was fubarred. Then I saw a mention that there had been a troublesome update. I have been getting error messages on my phone saying that it was eating my battery which might be part of it.

Uninstalled and reinstalled again. This time it took 20 minutes to download and install as against the almost immediate process before.

Now the two are talking. Unfortunately I lost this mornings ride data in all the messing around.

Hopefully this is problem solved. If not the above advice is very useful. The Elemnt looks interesting.

Thanks again for your help. (Damnned App!!!)
