I’ve just bought a set of Mavic XA wheels and rather belatedly read they are hookless.  Does this mean I need a certain type of tyre?  I have also given up on tubeless and so just want to bung a tube in and ride, is this going to cause a problem with hookless?

It’s a buzz term indicating super-tubeless-compatible that sprang up a couple of years ago I think. If tubeless is your bag I’d not worry about it.

Fine, modern tyres don’t really need a bead. Go back 20 years and they were hookless then too.. next big (old rehashed) thing innit..

Although, just go tubeless. 😬

Don;t worry about it- hookless is better, all other things being equal it makes for a lighter or stronger rim and slightly nicer tyre profile but you'll never notice in use

I use hookless XC421 rims with road tyres at 100 PSI (some of which stated only use hooked rims) and never had a problem.  Admittedly didn't realise they stated only for hooked rims until I took them off to replace them but don't think it is typical for a tyre to have that requirement.

As said, it was either hookless or tubular when I were a lad. I'd check tyre pressure limits with the manufacturer(s) though, BITD hookless clincher rims had a much lower limit than hooked clincher when that was introduced
