I seem to have eked out a few sets of High Rollers and Minions I got on offer a while back for going on half a decade.. but the time has come where I actually need to buy some winter tyres for my 2012 Nukeproof Mega and I need some help.. I'm absolutely bamboozled.

I'm after a 26" tyre that will have inner tubes to get me through the winter so something with a decent tread. Ideally no more than £35-40 an end. Is it normal practice to get a wider tyre at the front? Also, compounds have got me confused.. On top of this, just when I think I'm getting somewhere on Wiggle or CRC they're out of **** stock for my wheel size.

Does anyone have any suggestions please? Need to get something ordered as I struggled on my half bald tyres at the weekend.

Cheers

5 years! Holy ****!

All tyres are fine with tubes, don't worry about compounds or sidewalls, as you're not exactly sore on tyres.

Pick a 26" tyre, width is up to you, but if you're happy with the ones you had, go for that, and at a price you fancy, and a tread pattern you like the look of.

Spesh are very good at your price point, as are WTB.

That's pretty much what I run for the winter, some may favour a Minion DHF or High Roller on the front as a slightly less aggressive option

Haha! Aye 5 years... this is partly due to me also being a bit of a lazy barsteward.. and also getting some miles in on the CX bike.

Thank you for the advice and links. The Shorty certainly does look aggressive on the front but I might give it a whirl.

Thanks

I am a 26 in tyre user and agree that the biggest pain in the backside is finding something actually in stock online. Any knobbly decent tyre will probably be better than a set of old knackered ones. It depends if you want to get specific ones for the winter.

The default winter tyre (well for me) is a Maxxis Shorty, I had one for the front of my hardtail. I have the poshest 3C one (which basically means more compound in a fancy mix to give you grip) and it really is very good; got it for about £45. Got me trough a very muddy 2017/18 winter and will go back on the bike soon.

Front is more important to me, so as long as the rear climbs ok in the mud I don't mind. You could also use (on the front) something like a DHR2 (but again not ideal budget as over £40). If you don't mind a thinner tyre, Specialized Storms are very good and I think around £35; I have one I will be using as a rear this winter.

I have in the past used a Maxxis High Roller (both the original and HR2) as a front in the winter.

Tubes should fit any tyres you get.

Edit: Merlin Cycles offers linked above seem the way to go!

Plenty of dirt cheap stuff on PX at the moment...

https://www.planetx.co.uk/i/q/TYWTBWARFT/wtb-warden-folding-tyre-tcs

Just note that the Geax tubeless (TNT/UST) tyres can be an absolute PITA to install on some rims due to the tight bead. If you're running tubes and have more chance of punctures this is worth considering

Wow, those Planet X ones are cheap as chips! For a tenner it would be rude not to. Mind, those Maxxis Shorty's look pretty robust too.. decisions decisions.

Thanks for the advice and links everyone. It is much appreciated.
