Is there anyway i can remove and re fit hydro brakes to an internally routed frame without having to cut the hose to remove the olive?
I suspect i know the answer but thought i would ask
The only other way is to cut the frame.
Hadnt thought of that. Great idea, thanks
Depends on the brakes and the frame. In the past I've had some luck simply unscrewing the hose from the lever and threading it through, olive and all, equally I've had some where the hose alone has been near impossible to thread.
As above, is there any reason why you can't reuse the hose, with olive intact?
Good question
The problem is the nut which secures the hose to the caliper is held captive on the hose by the olive.
The nut is far too big to fit through through the internal routing.
probably not, but its only 10mm or so of hose you loose and a few quid in parts.
Just remember to put everything back in the right order with all necessary grommets and cover plates in place or you'll have to cut the olive/barb off again
Just remember to put everything back in the right order
And the shroud nut facing the right way. I learnt that "from a friend"
It's not so much the cost of the parts, I just don't have a lot of hose to play with.
Cheers all
Are they hope brakes? If so you can pop the olive and bits out and re fit for certain. However.....this was confirmed and demonstrated by the awesome LBS mechanic...as a ham fisted chimp I’m due to fit out if I can repeat this task!
no not hope, shimano
thanks
Olives are single use compression fittings. They cost pence. They may work a second time if the previous fitter knew how tight a brake fitting doesn’t need to be and didn’t rag it up Yorkshire Tight. Barb is interference will be reusable if you can to dig it out but won’t properly seal in the same hose end again.
There are brake fittings that are designed for this application but olive and barb are intended to be one shot.
If you want dependable brakes you need at least an Olive per side and lose about half an inch of hose plus a barb or a few minutes and potential finger injuries recovering the original while covering the floor in brake fluid. Doing the job more cheaply may work but YMMV.
Internal routing can GTF. I just tape the frame where it'll rub and route it externally because I'm
a. lazy
and
b. fickle- I'll be wanting to use the brakes on something else in a few month's time.
KKCan’t you just get the olive off and leave the hose and barb intact?
New olive is a quid I think.
