Mix of road pavement trail, track etc. Mtb too much, don't like drop handlebars so going for a hybrid. Thoughts on specialised crosstrail vs Boardman hybrid team. Appreciate perhaps not v inspiring but reckon more bang for buck. This said other suggestions welcome.

Had a Crosstrail before, nice enough bike but I didn't see the point in having that and a hardtail MTB. It's not really much lighter or faster on the road and less capable off.

The Boardman or similar rigid flat bar bike would be my pick (haven't ridden one).

Boardman looks good, was eyeing one of them up yesterday as a replacement for my road bike as I’m sick of adjusting cable disc brakes and I’m thinking about going flat bar.

Not bad at all for £400

Bang for the buck, Voodoo Marasa if it's still £320 before cashback or British Cycling membership discount.

/thread 😉

Whyte hybrids are similar to the Boardman but better angles imo, ride more like a MTB. The Shoreditch has a carbon fork and deore for not much more £ if you can find one on sale.

Also Orbea Carpe are high spec.

Both worth a test ride.

I picked up one of these Lithiums on Friday for commuting duties. I got them to put full mud guards on too. Only ridden it home from the shop but it seems pretty nice and would be ok for a bit of mild off road. Wide tyres for extra comfort.

I’ve got a crosstrail, after 15 months of commuting to work, I hate it, it’s a horrible bike just not enjoyable to ride at all.

It’s heavy and the suspension is useless, doesnt need it and weighs the bike down. I’m looking at the new Boardman urb range, they will take the same tyres as the crosstrail which is one of its plus points and they feel lighter and more fun to ride.

Doesn’t help ive put the mudguards on earlier than last year, and they rattle!

That Pinnacle Lithium would be the ome I'd get: nice big tyres, square taper bb, mounts for mudguards and rack etc. Lovely!

I've just converted an Inbred into a hack around/ road/ commuter and it's brilliant, rigid hardtail mtbs with fat road tyres and mudguards etc are ace.

I got the boardman hybrid team for the money the kit on it is spot on. I fitted wider bars 35mm tyres guards and a rack perfect for the job.

I've got a flat bar'd Hoy, it does the job but the handling is awful. I got it cheap second hand. New, I'd go for the Pinnacle or Whyte

I've a Litium 3 from a couple of years ago, the bright green one. Got a Toppeak supertourist rack on it, SKS full guards

It's now my go-to bike as most of my riding is road or gentle off road and it can handle it,

Not too sure about specs of bikes at the moment but, at the time, it was best spec for the money. Being lazy, I got Evans to price match the SKS mudguards with cheapest I could find online and they fitted them free for me when they were building the bike up.

Had a snapped spoke back in the summer and the lad in my local branch fitted another free of charge. Not sure if he was being nice or if it was because id obviously bought the bike there as is an exclusive brand but I offered to pay and he said no.

I have a boardman hybrid, though it's a couple of years old, I think today's version has a different frame. It's ace, anyway- it was cheap, pretty light, has tyre clearance for 35cs with mudguards, and rides nicely but also uses mostly mtb standards so I could pick up unfashionable mtb parts for peanuts. Lightweight QR-only 29er wheels for £80, narrow carbon bars for £20. And older mtb bits go there to die- it has my old Formula Oros (10 years old this year) and assorted 9-speed drivetrain on it and when those break something else from the unsellable spares box will go on. I only really spend money now on tyres, pads and chain lube.

It's probably my most succesful bike tbh. Though it's too nice looking, for a courier.

Take a look at Genesis Skylines?

A range of options/spec and prices but the 30 looks pretty good on paper for what you get- especially in sales now

Whilst we're on the subject, is now a good time to buy a hybrid boardman? Looking back over previous thread you see comments such as "Wait till 'x' date as they will be reduced".

Take the hybrid team in the link below for the example, is £630 a good price or if I waited to buy would I expect to see a better price?
