I’m planning to get a set of Hunt wheels after getting some good news after my knee scan. They are to be a spare set for my Salsa Vaya and shod with gravel/fast mountain bike tyres, to swap between my road set.
If I go 700c the frame can take 50c tyres or should I opt for 650b which if I’m right can fit 2.2 tyres.
Any thoughts or anyone running both sizes and have a preference over one or the other.
Cheers
I would go with which does (and will in the future) have a good choice of the tyres you want.
I’m thinking more along the lines of suppleness/ plushness comfort of the 650b vs the pick up and speed of the 700c , with the ability to run 50c tyres I’m wondering if there’s much to gain with 650b wheels
My 650b on my gravel bike make it more manoeuvrable and I don’t notice any loss of speed on the road. I keep up with my road mates, and if anything seems to spin up hills even quicker.
Caher cheers for that. I think I’ll give it a go with 650b
On the other hand, I switched from a 650bX47mm (Byway) to a 700cX38mm (gravelking slick) setup on my gravel bike and it was noticeably faster (Strava). It was 300g per wheel lighter though, so hardly surprising. That’s looking at times on the road though.
I still like the 650b setup for fun and it’s my preferred option if I’m riding off-road most of the day. It might even be faster over rough ground (not really sure), but I’ll take the 700c option if there is going to be a lot of road.
There’s not much in it in terms of volume. 50mm vs what, 56mm?
I’d go 700c and fit 29x2.0 tyres.
@ daffy that was my original plan but Salsa day the Vaya won’t take 29 x 2.0 but confusingly will take 700c x 50?
