Any opinions for a lay person on which would be more suitable?

To go on a Whyte T130 C RS 2017 mostly used for trails in the Surrey hills, but will take it out for a week in the Alps - some uplift some working for the climbs. I'm not light at 100kg, but not doing big jumps - anything with a gap in it scares the sh*t out of me!

Not getting on particularly well with the Whyte wheels that came with it. Snapped a rear axle (not doing anything in particular) and had the cassette come a bit loose a couple of times with the chain getting caught between cassette and flanges.

Had been looking at having some wheels built out of pro 4s and DT Swiss xm481s but the Hunt trail wide have caught my eye. Any thoughts?

Hope pro4 and dt swiss rims all day long. The xm481 is probably the best trail/all mountain rim on the market. Its light, strong and cheap.
You could even run an ex rim on the back if you want more strength.

I love my hunt road wheels - but I’d go hope / Dt rims every day on my mtb. In fact I have recently built that exact pairing you have mentioned to go on my Aeris.

If you are about 100kgs and it’s going to see some alps action I’d do what samuelr mentioned above I think - xm481 on the front and ex511 on the back.

+1 for what's been said above, also look at the DT completes which use those rims.

As above get the dt rims.

Personally I'd swap the hope pro4s out for some dt350 hubs too. Better freehub mechanism and just better hubs imho for similair money.

I did consider the 350’s over the pro4’s for my build but couldn’t find them for the same money as the Hope’s - they were a bit more wherever I looked. Plus the closest in price had the 18t ratchet rather than the 36t. If they’d actually been the same price I’d have likely gone 350’s as they seem to need less maintenance from what I read.

I'd take the pro 4 option any day. Mine have been faultless.
I'm not that impressed with my DTs. They get used in all conditions but not blasted with water or chemicals, and the bearings aren't holding up too well.

I think you'd be fine with either.  My preference would certainly be Pro4 and XM481 but aren't they different price brackets? (and note my preference is based on desire rather than any hard facts, the Hunts may or may not be equal performance wise)

Thanks for the input all. Yes, the XM481 and Pro 4s are a bit more expensive than the Hunt wheels, but that doesn't concern me if they're better.

Had a set of XM481's on the enduro since August. Still straight and true after multiple uplift days, eastridge and a few trips to innerleithen.

Previosuly had a set of EX471's and they did two years of abuse without even a spoke key being run over them.

Build them with the DT squorx prolock nipples and the pwr washers, I'm convinced its what helps to keep wheels truer/tensioned longer.
