My rear shimano cup and cone freehub is on its last legs and I am looking for a replacement.
Its for a Specialized enduro and is 135mm wide and currently runs a standard QR skewer.

I am a fairly heavy rider but I don't ride hard in the scheme of things and dont do jumps or any drop offs greater than a foot or two.

I want to get rid of the maintenance hungry cup and cone set up and go to cartridge bearings. Ideally with a 10mm axle although thats a want rather then a need.

Yes a hope rear hub would be nice but I dont think I warrant one with the kind of riding I do. Can you reccommend a suitable alternative hub that takes a 9spd cassette?

I currently run a set of Mavic 117 Xm rims, would it be worth my while gettin this rim swapped onto the new hub or be more cost effective to buy a new rear wheel with my choise of hub already installed?

Many thanks for your info
Colin

I watch with interest, I need a new rear hub too, though for different reasons. Don't really fancy Hope because of the racket they make...

I'd be needing 142x12 though

You are aware that the free-hub can be changed...
Just buy a Deore hub & strip it, then re-assemble into your hub.
Couple of cone spanners & a 12mmm hex key for the freehub (I think).

Hopes arent exactly hubs-for-life, its just the mystic black art of adjusting/servicing cup & cones that needlessly frightens people. Stay on top of maintainance & they are absoluteley fine. Problem isnt helped by Shimano hubs leaving the factory with sod-all grease in them, & folk rightly feel peeved at having to open up a brand new hub to add decent grease.

For what your going to spend buying a Hope hub, & possibly new spokes, then probably paying someone to rebuild the wheel, I would pick up some second hand Hope Hoops. Been a few sets on here this week, around the £160-£180 mark. Sell your old ones, should recoup $40 or so. If theyre Stans rims you'll end up with a fairly substantial weight saving to boot.

I think Hope have changed the springs they use for their freehub pawls for this year to make things quieter; certainly, my news Pro3 on the commuter is nowhere as clicky as the Pro2 on the MTB.

Thanks, its not the freehub its self that is shot, its the bearings and the cup and cone that is pitted badly.

So you think the cost of the new hub purchase, the re lacing of my existing rim onto it would not be worth doing compared to a second hand wheelset and I may get better lighter rims to boot?

Thanks

I would go for a decent 2nd hand pair. Sell your old ones on to soften the cost..
