I put it in the shed and put an old wheel in and then forgot about it- now I'm moving I'm wondering what to do with it. Don't want to just bin it because the rim (DT Swiss XR4D) is still good, but is it worth rebuilding the rim onto a new hub?
If you're happy to do the build yourself then yes, why not? If you're paying someone else to build it up then you may find it's cheaper to buy a whole new wheel.
Is that a Hope hub? If it is it would be worth sending back to them. They're very helpful and it might save you a few quid
Most of the many Hope products that fail are warrantied...
Can't see the end of the spoke in the failed hole, but it looks like the spoke elbow is still intact?
If that's the case, the wheel section in the STW Materials Science textbook needs to be re-written: '..silver spokes are stronger than black spokes, which are stronger than red hub..'
If that is indeed a Hope hub, as it looks to be, get in touch with Hope.
I've heard of people with 10 year old hubs doing something similar to this, and they still repaired or replaced under warranty! Even if they weren't the original owner too...

Hmm, it is a Hope Pro II, since it's a few years old though I'd assumed warranty options would be long gone- I'll give Hope a try.
Ask them; if they don't want to warranty it, keep an eye on the classifieds for a red Hope front hub; you should be able to find one for £50 or less if you're patient. And rebuilding a wheel is easier than building from scratch; it's how I learned to build wheels 🙂
I would give hope a phone, I just returned a 6 year old hub that cracked around one of the disc mounts. Even though I had no proof of purchase they replaced the hub shell and fitted new bearings and returned it in just 3 days. Very impressed and will definatly by hope again
Ditto I had a Hope Pro II as a second owner and about 5 years old and it suffered total shell failure and they replaced it (and with new bearing races) for free-superb service hence I only buy Hope hubs!
By the way I emailed them first with pictures and explained that I was not the original purchaser but had copy of purchase receipt and Hope still did what they did.
Hope are absolutely brilliant at sorting out out of warranty products.
They fixed an old LED2 light of mine last year, well out of warranty and second owner.
I was quite happy to pay for the repair (that is how I sent it in) but they sent it back free of charge with a new lead soldered into the light unit.
Quick update: posted my hub to Hope end of last week and it's just landed back on my desk with a shiny new shell. Impressed 🙂
