Are they much lighter than an original square taper set up?
As I can't really find a weight for my old Race Face turbine square taper crankset, I have been doing some approximation on WW, but as far as my guess goes, weight of both set ups are rather close at 811 grs for the square tapered (BB 186grs + crankset 625grs) and 850grs for the shimano HT II. Am I wrong somewhere? Or was HT II marketing bullpoo?

I always thought ht11 was brought in for extended bearing life ? I didn't think it was just about weight ?

The very last thing HTII did was improve bearing life.

HT11 is supposed to be stiffer because the bearings are further out.

Yeah ISIS was far more reliable

"HT11 is supposed to be stiffer because the bearings are further out"
And the axle is much wider

between my old (low end) Truvativ 5D,CompG,others square tapers and hollowtech (LX/XT/SLX) I can notice the difference in flex.

Also, I rounded the squares of I think all my sqaure taper cranks. Hollowtech (and octalink) I've not done so

That hollow axle has to be lighter surely ?

I'm not convinced square taper is any tougher , the 3 or 4 cranks that I've seen come off mid ride have been square taper.

I single speed on an old hollow tech crankset , no probs yet , apart from a new bottom bracket every 3 or 4 months !

It wasn't ever really about weight was it? Square taper was breaking too much (even I managed to break an axle) the replacement (Octolink, Isis) solved the axle breaking but the bearings were so small they weren't up to the job. HT11 was the compromise, big bearings, tube rather than axle, must still fit into existing BB.

Did a reasonable job really

Just weighed a Deore M590 HTII triple 9 speed 885g crankset plus 99g BB. So 850g all-in for an XT sounds right.

I found the Octalink much more reliable than ISIS.

The deore HTII seized due to rust after not many months. I bought an XT to replace it but still haven't fitted it though. I've just flushed all the brown stuff out of my deore and re-greased again. With some TLC it seems to keep on going.

I missed the Isis band wagon thankfully having seen how truly bad they were some lasting weeks on mates bikes. Having done ht II they were better stiff and easy to fit and change and make Bb mounted chain devices easier. Now I have moved to hope bb it's more reliable than ever.
