You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Scrounged a HR monitor too try out today (actually one I bought for my wife a while back that she never used).
Interesting, but no real idea what I was looking at. I'm 42, 5'6" and about 12.5 stone. 3 hour, 65km ride today - flat but windy on a 32:16 singlespeed. HR average over the ride was 152, peaking at around 175 on the few hills round here, sprints and the windiest sections.
That 152 average felt fairly comfortable, certainly within the 'able to hold a normal conversation' range.
Do those numbers around reasonable? And what should I be reading to find out how to use a HR monitor properly on a bike?
You need to work out your max heart rate, from that find your levels and then train in those levels.
Or just leave the HRM off and enjoy riding your bike.

Cheers. Will read that properly later.
Can someone suggest a decent basic HR monitor?
175 seems a little low for 42 but everyone is different. find a short sharp climb and hit it as hard as you can, repeatedly, till you want to puke. third time up usually produces the goods.
175 didn't feel full on pukeworthy, more like a hard effort that I would struggle to maintain for any length of time.
Having said that, in terms of inaccurate max HR calculations the 220-age thing would give me 178? The other rough method in that link above would give me 184 for a max?
