Got a maxxis High Roller II out front on my trail bike (cube stereo) whats best out back? Got choice of ; another HRII or an Ardent or a HR I. For general trail riding? some flat/some ups and some downs, nothing major!
Crossmark for a giggle!
HR1 makes a good rear tyre
I'm using a minion DHF on the back at the mo which I quite like, rolls surprisingly well too.
Got an Ardent on the back of mine at the moment with HR2 front.
HRII are cheaper, but I prefer a slightly less grippy tyre on the back, so I run Ardent. Have done for years now.
Been running a HR1 up front with a Minion DHF on the rear for the past 4 months and it seems pretty good so far.
The Ardent is a good rear for when the conditions are right, like a dry trail centre, but they seem to lack some bite when it's loose and seem to pinch flat easier too.

That would strike me as the "wrong" way round - grippy tyre out back, fast roller up front.
yeah usual hate from me at mixing square and round tyres like minions and High rollers.
Ran the HRII up front and Ardent on the rear over winter and was great (not that wet, mostly hardpack and rocks here) dropped back to a pair of ardents now for all round summer.
HRII (2.3) on the front & Ardent (2.25) on the back for me!
Specialized Captain 2.2 on the back of mine, works really well- better mud manners and side tread than an Ardent but otherwise fairly similiar.
Ardent here just recently swapped to a part-worn Advantage
Another Ardent fan. I'm currently using a WTB Wolverine I had lying about since I ripped the sidewall on another Aredent, it's a tiny bit faster rolling and a bit more fun in the corners (less traction, more action) but I'll be putting another ardent on as soon as I can.
Personal preference of course so you'll never get a definitive answer but yeah....Ardent until things get very muddy. I
HR2 and DHR 2 here. Great combo for the Lakes
Ive got a Cube SuperStereo 160sl.. I'm running a HR2 3c maxxterra up front and a WTB Vigilante on the rear..
I was running an ardent before and whilst it was good in trail centre stuff.. It was next to useless on natural trails. The vigilante is much better. It's not draggy and it bites in much better than the ardent.
for the winter im going to a magic mary + vigilante..
