I have and old Santa Cruz Heckler that I ride sometimes when I fancy a reminisce and my eldest rides it when we visit a trail centre, and was still rides really nice to ride. The 620mm wide X-lite bars felt great (maybe a bit wide but I would get used to it!!) when I bought them 15 years ago but since riding my new Orange with 780mm wide Renthals on the Santa Cruz feels proper weird, the lad isn't keen on it either.
I needs some new ones, question is how wide can I go without upsetting the handling? And would it be best to minimise the impact by putting on a slightly shorter stem at the same time?
The heckler is a 1998 model, with 100mm Marzocchi Bomber Z1's it has a 71degree head angle and a 90mm stem.
Thanks
My stumpy has similar angles I reckon, 620 was stock I ended up at 690. 700 + I found too wide.
Horses for courses though, I've sold it and it's now sporting 740's and a 50mm stem and being enjoyed so I supposed it depends on what you fancy.
I put 760s on a 2007 Patriot, it was ridiculous, and made the handling really slow. Made me slower overall around Swinley which requires quick steering.
