[Closed] How well do frozen 5:10s grip iced up flat pedals?

Had a pair for years but hate having lots of pedal grip ing able to swist/slide my foot on the pedals so never worn them but today up the golfie in the snow I had almost zero shoe grip on my pedals in my regular riding shoes so had to hold my feet in place all day using my body position. Not ideal but perfectly workable if a little restrictive.
Do they have any less grip at sub zero? like does the rubber harden at all?

Wondering whether to christen the special needs disability shoes tomorrow, got the bike already 😉

Not noticed any difference on frozen days, or in snow. On the pedals that is. Pushing is a bit rubbish.

Cheers!
Pushing what? the bike?
That won't be an issue. it's all 100% rideable

Never noticed it on the 5 10s specifically but I've had pedal pins ice up- pedals get pretty damn cold so water splash seems to gather on the pins. I did one ride in the pentlands where I'd never stopped for ages and when I did, all the pins on one side had little perfect blobs of ice on while the others were all like normal, kinda weird and cool

Yeah Northwind. Was hoping you'd reply. that was exactly the issue, pins and edges iced up good n proper so nothing to grip to.
In the dry I don't really need pins at all. a good edge and the pedal's concave is enough but today I had neither. Still an awesome day tho.

You healed?

Ps. the new track up there is sweet. (even has little hippable jumps)

I've used mine on a day in Kinlochleven when my brakes, gears and water in my pack partly froze but had no issue at all with the shoes. I'm no expert in the molecular structure of rubber compounds but I'd imagine that sustained extremely low temperatures would be required for a shoe sole to freeze solid.

How snowy was the golfie / tweed valley in general? I rode golfie on Monday and the trails were largely frozen but there hadn't been any snow. I'm hoping to get over again on Saturday.

Used my Five Tens for the first time in about a year in frozen, snowy conditions on some new DMR V12 pedals.

Once I'd got used to flats again, I was really impressed! Forgotten how nice it is to just jump on pedals without having to clip in first.

Took a few goes to get out of the habit of pivoting my ankle when stepping off the pedals 🙂

Me and the missus always go on about this! People who aren't keen on trying clipless buy the stickiest shoes and pedals with massive spikes so they can't move.

lucky. I was up the Golfie all day Monday too.
Tree covered trails are still riding the same. FW has snow but it's grippy. it's just the climb that has snow cover. from the reservoir up to the top would have been difficult (prob a push) without an ebike. fireroads not an issue.
Walkerburn side is snow free. Pony riding great.
Traquair side has far less snow too.

Really not a fan of that at all. infact I prefer being clipped in.

Thanks for the update geex. As long as the tree covered stuff is riding ok I'll be happy. Just have to wear my boots for the pushing up from the reservoir!!

No worries. it's still rideable with a HRII on the rear. You'll just be knackered doing it. I met two far fitter guys than me who resorted to pushing it.

I'm a lazy ebike rider. There's no way I could be bothered doing all that. smashing a bit of ice I mean, nevermind 24 hours repeating the same lap all the way up in Contin. 😉

I biked in Lapland (in the snow) on an e-fat bike with hiking boots. No problem with pins

I haven't yet been anyway cold/icy enough for my flats to not work with my pedals (Teva Links and DMR V12s), but I haven't been anywhere completely freezing, just light freezing

Took them out the box. OMG they're even uglier than I'd remembered.
Put 'em back and cracked out a brand new pair of etnies instead.

anyone want a brand new pair of impact something 5 10s?
(Black with blue logo) Size 10 uk

They won't fit in with your biker tramp look?

Rubber perishes, so the performance - even if the shoes are unused - will deteriorate. At lower temperatures, the tread 'hardens' so the mechanical grip will reduce. The 5:10's with tread will work much better in winter, because they tread blocks pick up some of the slack of the frozen rubber.

I have 5:10 Impact VXI's (with tread) and also some Freerider VXI's (which have the smooth, pedal section, without tread). The latter are not good when it's at or near freezing. In my opinion.

The trick to this is to do a few days practicing with your feet in slightly the wrong place. Gets you used to everything not being 100 percent perfect. That and practicing starts so you get your foot in the right position the first tine.

On snow days push a bar of soap over the pins and it stops them icing over

Top tip Tony. Cheers. Hope yer well.

Steven. Still going for mid 90s Jake chique with a freeride stoner slant... and totally pulling it off BTW. 😉

Ray. Sorry man. You've missed my point entirely. I'm an ambi footed freak of nature who can aleady ride more than competently with my feet in pretty much any position including using the crank arm instead of the pedal. I simply don't like (entirely my own preference) having to lift a foot to alter it's position. Or UGLY footwear!
I'm also well over practicing starts.

it's all cool anyway. the good ol' reliable Calicut patern sole gripped and slid like a boss when required all day today. Yesterday's etnies soles are bald and through to the footbed across the arch/ball area.

You healed?

Getting there, bone's doing OK but it'll take a while to get the movement and strength back. On track for a 100% recovery unless I rush it and mess it up so, that's what I'm doing. Driving me nuts though...

Yeah I remember that feeling all too well. Shite isn't it? Wish I'd had your patience when injured. I might not be in such a mess now if I had.

I've got it wrong both ways in the past, went too slow with my broken hip, went too hard with my shoulder and my thumb (it's sort of continually broken now, always in the broken/healing cycle) I think I've got it about right this time. Throw enough darts and you're bound to hit something...
