Just bought babybgoode his first ‘proper’ bike so going to be taking him up to Greno to do some of the very easy trails etc.

This of course means dusting my ride down which I guess is deeply unfashionable.

26” wheels

1 1/18” non-tapered steerer

Steel

Hardtail

27.2mm seatpost

Triple

9 speed

Springloaded dropper

Anyone else still rocking ‘90’s bike fashion? I actually enjoy mine - does far better on the trails than I do!

Yup - all as above except 2x9 plus bash on my prince Albert, won't ever be parting with it though

2.8” tyres, they aren’t fashionable now are they.

Is 2.6” not the new 2.8”?

'09 Turner Flux here but:

Bolt through front axle on DT Swiss XMM's

Dropper post

1x11

So a weird hybrid of old and new (ish...)

I love the Turner and the way it rides so I'm currently scared to try a more modern geometry bike in case I like it 🙂

I've also got a Bontrager Race if I'm feeling really retro.

I'm riding a rigid steel hardtail with a 3x9 drivetrain (XT Octalink hailing from around 2003 I think), straight steerer, QR wheels, flat pedals, bar ends and 690ish mm bars. I upgraded to a 29er last November but prior to this was riding 26" wheels.

In a nod towards modernity I recently went tubeless!

If the thread title was "How unfashionable are you?" I'd have to own up to wearing cycle clips.

Not crabon.

Wrong sized wheels/tyres.

Think that's it, I reckon I'm just about passable in polite society.

All my bikes have one deeply unfashionable, made in the 80’s, oft broken, part that is in no way up to the stresses of modern MTB.

The rider.

I'm not apologising for the wide bars 😁

Even my posh bike only has one bolt thru axle, no dropper and none series shimano brakes 😢

Mine is bang on trend at the front and gets progressively dated towards the rear.

Tapered steerer forks, 27.5+ boost front wheel, 3”+ tyre, 50mm stem, 800mm bars.

Rigid 27.2mm seat post, single speed, 27.5+ rear with 3” tyre, QR rear hub, and a Brooks saddle.

Got to keep ‘em guessing.

Sorry to be a let-down but I've ditched the dinner-plate of a triple (48/36/26) on my 26" commuter and replaced with a 38t narrow-wide, but it's still 9 speed. Decided I didn't want chunky ergonomic grips any more either. Mudguards are in shed until the Winter. It's got a dropper post too. And rigid carbon forks after lack of maintenance of the suspension forks killed them. Also replaced the antique 12 year old Deore hydraulics with SLX. I actually prefer it without the triple and when I ride my (2012) FS with a triple I get confused and change gear instead of dropping the saddle.

As OP, but not posh enough to have a dropper post! Unfashionable enough to use a Brooks B17 but don't care because I can ride all day and walk straight afterwards. 🙂 On-One Mary bars too... don't plan to change much for a few years yet but might try the Stooge Moto bars now that they're available again.

Brooks Swift Ti on mine - bought back in the day before Brooks became hipster.

All my bikes have Brooks on them for exactly the reason you mention.

And yes, in answer to someone else above. Good old fashioned QR’s. Forgot to mention square taper B.B. as well. Threaded-not press fit.

The most retro thing in the shed are a couple of Spesh 26inch Hardtails my wife and one of the offspring haven’t ridden for years. I might have a 90mm stem somewhere.

Or the 456 with pace forks and octalink LX cranks and alfine hub

Also have a 89 Kona hahanna too.

Fashionable photo filter gives it a fashionable look.  Fashionably long legs too, by the look of that seatpost.  Do you do drainpipes and fashionable shoes?  It all counts in the Reckoning 👁

Hmm, not sure about that seatpost being fashionable, but irrespectively, everything fashionable about that is smashed by those forks and v-brakes.

Me too, with unfashionable RF C/S & BB and eggbeater pedals, Panaracer tyres, 600mm bars and Onza bar ends.

It climbs like a monkey compared to some bikes I've ridden recently.

Not at all really. I sold out and jumped the shark and am now (currently) enjoying a (v. cheap, second hand) 2016 Cube Stereo 140. I suppose it's unfashionably common, or is common fashionable now? I dunno. It's fun, regardless. Bikes, innit, just go for a ride.

I’m just about to start an upgrade project on my Whyte PRST-1.

not sure if she was ever fashionable, but man do I love her !!

Zippy,

if your brother ever gets bored of that Marin I could be interested. I’ve heard those swing arms fit the PRST-1....

Steel framed 150mm full suss. Could be either full hipster or the complete opposite depending on your PoV I guess.

26 x 2.8 wheels/tyres. Again, either cutting edge or so far off-piste it hurts.

1 x 10. Almost retro now?

They are still unfashionable, it just doesn't matter.

I started riding fixed gear track bikes on and off road almost 20 years ago.  They were not fashionable and pretty much only used by roadies in the winter

There use on the road then became very fashionable in late 2000's.  (good for me as I had much better selection of parts and frames)

They are now no longer the height of fashion although I have seen something called Tracklocross (using a brakeless fixed track bike on easy off road, i.e what I have done for 20 years) so I may still be just in fashion in those circles.

Another 10 years and I would guess I will be very out of fashion and not even the winter roadies will be using fixed as they will be too old.

Even though mine is relatively current I’d say it’s still unfashionable.

1. It’s a hardtail made of aluminium and not a full sus in carbon.

2. It’s got a non-stealth reverb on it.

3. It’s got Superstar wheels on it which though light, straight, wide and subtle, are neither Hope, nor Stans, nor carbon.

I like it it but I don’t think many would covet it so I’d say unfashionable.

26"  100mm travel front and rear, 27.2 rigid post, 69/72 degree angles,  3x9 sram drive train, QR wheels  and a kona.

Total singletrack killer though.  And FAST!

Up until a month ago I was riding a 26er 100mm hardtail with a 71 degree head angle and short reach. 27.2 rigid seatpost and it was 3x9 XT until just before Christmas.

I rode my brothers 27.5 plus Kona Unit while we were out for a ride together and it felt more capable than mine, then last month I bought a Marin Pine Mountain 1.

The Marin is still unfashionable, but it's a bit more modern, has tapered forks, boost spacing and 1x11. It also has a fixed 27.2 post yet I don't feel the need to lower the saddle as much.

I feel it's fair to say that modern bikes are more capable than the older ones, but as always the rider is more important than the bike, and your unfashionable bike is as fun as it always has been. I prefer my new bike, but still loved the old one.

Full-sus: Fork isn’t boost. Rims only 25mm wide.

Hardtail: Not boost. 25mm rims. 10 speed. 750mm bars.

Almost fashionable. Yeah.

Fashion is a construct that only exists in the mind. As you say, it doesn't matter - but I wonder if it's a form of mental illness. 🙂

The bike remains a bike.

Not really.  It just means something that is popular or of the latest style.   A 1990's MTB is neither popular or of the latest style therefore is not fashionable.

But if people are buying them because they are a certain style, deliberately unfashionable, aren’t they just a different side of the same coin/fashion?

like the kid you see in old, knackered clothes, but they are old and knackered in just the right way

In addition to the above, it's got ergon grips, and until they broke the ones with built in bar ends...

And a straight steerer.

Now I'm just praying nothing on it breaks as there won't be any replacements for it!
