Just bought babybgoode his first ‘proper’ bike so going to be taking him up to Greno to do some of the very easy trails etc.
This of course means dusting my ride down which I guess is deeply unfashionable.
26” wheels
1 1/18” non-tapered steerer
Steel
Hardtail
27.2mm seatpost
Triple
9 speed
Springloaded dropper
Anyone else still rocking ‘90’s bike fashion? I actually enjoy mine - does far better on the trails than I do!
Yup - all as above except 2x9 plus bash on my prince Albert, won't ever be parting with it though

Sounds like late 00's early 10's that 😉
'97 Lava Dome, with Y2K Manitou Forks, USE Suspension seatpost, 3x7, 90mm stem and skinwalls
Shan has 26" wheels and straight steerer
But then I have a carbon Capra and an ebike
Yup, all the above except...
fixed 27.2 post
unfashionably narrow bars
Schwalbe tyres with conti tubes (Maxxis gave me flats)
Springloaded dropper
Oohh get you, posh git. 😉
70 degree head angle, 700mm bars. No dropper. Frankly It’s a miracle I’m still alive
90s? My bike is bang up to date what I wear however

1.9" tyres.
Rigid.
Triple.
Steep HA
Narrow bars.
No dropper.
Cable brakes.
QR axles
Oh no. That's my gravel bike....
9 speed
Springloaded dropper

Triple and proud.
I trust that all the above is also conventional QR, no thru axle too?
V-Brakes on one bike
oh and that spec is very much mid-late 2000's not 90's 😉
V's and QR on the Kona
2.8” tyres, they aren’t fashionable now are they.
Is 2.6” not the new 2.8”?
Why don’t you call then flat barred travel bikes, they would be bang on trend then
'09 Turner Flux here but:
Bolt through front axle on DT Swiss XMM's
Dropper post
1x11
So a weird hybrid of old and new (ish...)
I love the Turner and the way it rides so I'm currently scared to try a more modern geometry bike in case I like it 🙂
I've also got a Bontrager Race if I'm feeling really retro.
I'm riding a rigid steel hardtail with a 3x9 drivetrain (XT Octalink hailing from around 2003 I think), straight steerer, QR wheels, flat pedals, bar ends and 690ish mm bars. I upgraded to a 29er last November but prior to this was riding 26" wheels.
In a nod towards modernity I recently went tubeless!
If the thread title was "How unfashionable are you?" I'd have to own up to wearing cycle clips.
Not crabon.
Wrong sized wheels/tyres.
Think that's it, I reckon I'm just about passable in polite society.
All my bikes have one deeply unfashionable, made in the 80’s, oft broken, part that is in no way up to the stresses of modern MTB.
The rider.

I'm not apologising for the wide bars 😁
Even my posh bike only has one bolt thru axle, no dropper and none series shimano brakes 😢
I gave this to my brother, I’m looking to get another though.

100mm qr forks, 26” wheels, 3x9 Dual Control and a 26.8 seatpost.
Very... Rear Disc Spaced fork; non-tapered steerer; rigid seatpost; 747mm bars; 2x8 speed; 110mm stem; q/r axles; 28mm tyres! 😮
Does a Merlin Rock Lobster Team Tig SL count?
3x9
27.5 rigid seatpost
RockShox Duke forks
Mine is bang on trend at the front and gets progressively dated towards the rear.
Tapered steerer forks, 27.5+ boost front wheel, 3”+ tyre, 50mm stem, 800mm bars.
Rigid 27.2mm seat post, single speed, 27.5+ rear with 3” tyre, QR rear hub, and a Brooks saddle.
Got to keep ‘em guessing.
Sorry to be a let-down but I've ditched the dinner-plate of a triple (48/36/26) on my 26" commuter and replaced with a 38t narrow-wide, but it's still 9 speed. Decided I didn't want chunky ergonomic grips any more either. Mudguards are in shed until the Winter. It's got a dropper post too. And rigid carbon forks after lack of maintenance of the suspension forks killed them. Also replaced the antique 12 year old Deore hydraulics with SLX. I actually prefer it without the triple and when I ride my (2012) FS with a triple I get confused and change gear instead of dropping the saddle.
As OP, but not posh enough to have a dropper post! Unfashionable enough to use a Brooks B17 but don't care because I can ride all day and walk straight afterwards. 🙂 On-One Mary bars too... don't plan to change much for a few years yet but might try the Stooge Moto bars now that they're available again.
As OP minus dropper plus rapid rise and onza spd pedals and to further alienate people I cracked and got an ebike as well and I just donated my bar ended 8sp gripshift marz zokes fs to charity
2001 Cannondale HT
Lefty
26"
3x9
Ergons
It did have a thudbuster and Gripshift at one point.
Unfashionable enough to use a Brooks B17 but don’t care because I can ride all day and walk straight afterwards.
Brooks Swift Ti on mine - bought back in the day before Brooks became hipster.
All my bikes have Brooks on them for exactly the reason you mention.
And yes, in answer to someone else above. Good old fashioned QR’s. Forgot to mention square taper B.B. as well. Threaded-not press fit.
Me,me,me.
taking my triple9 speed hardcore hardtail ,no dropper post! to Afan/Brechfa in a couple of weeks. I’ll hang my head in shame .
lol @benp1
Flat bars, only 100m of fork travel, bottle cages & saddle pack, xc angles & no dropper post.
flat pedals
That makes you enduro Bro 🙂
The most retro thing in the shed are a couple of Spesh 26inch Hardtails my wife and one of the offspring haven’t ridden for years. I might have a 90mm stem somewhere.
Not sure if unfashionable or not. I don't get time to ride MTB these days anyway so meh 🙂
Similar to AD, except 1x10 on a German xc bike.
Or the 456 with pace forks and octalink LX cranks and alfine hub
Also have a 89 Kona hahanna too.
^^
Not sure if unfashionable or not
Fashionable photo filter gives it a fashionable look. Fashionably long legs too, by the look of that seatpost. Do you do drainpipes and fashionable shoes? It all counts in the Reckoning 👁
BBBBrooks are hhhhipster!? 😩 omg why didn't anyone tell me… my only defence m'lud is that like you I've had mine since before hipster was a thing.
Oh, and square taper threaded bottom bracket too (UN54), Middleburn cranks…

Hmm, not sure about that seatpost being fashionable, but irrespectively, everything fashionable about that is smashed by those forks and v-brakes.
its actually on eBay for sale and its so unfashionable that no one wants to pay £100 ono for it
Just head to a retro mug Facebook group full of idiots paying way over the odds 😉
Does a Merlin Rock Lobster Team Tig SL count?
3×9
27.5 rigid seatpost
RockShox Duke forks
Hell yeah!

Me too, with unfashionable RF C/S & BB and eggbeater pedals, Panaracer tyres, 600mm bars and Onza bar ends.
It climbs like a monkey compared to some bikes I've ridden recently.
Not at all really. I sold out and jumped the shark and am now (currently) enjoying a (v. cheap, second hand) 2016 Cube Stereo 140. I suppose it's unfashionably common, or is common fashionable now? I dunno. It's fun, regardless. Bikes, innit, just go for a ride.
I can not remember what happened to my Scary Fast gloves, they were awesome.
And on the HT, everything is out of date. 95 DBR Axis TT.
old 2003 rocky mountain blizzard 853 reynolds steel hardtail... converted to 1x10 still works....

Bikes that do the job you want are never unfashionable.
However some status seeking princesses may disagree...
I’m just about to start an upgrade project on my Whyte PRST-1.
not sure if she was ever fashionable, but man do I love her !!
Zippy,
if your brother ever gets bored of that Marin I could be interested. I’ve heard those swing arms fit the PRST-1....
Steel framed 150mm full suss. Could be either full hipster or the complete opposite depending on your PoV I guess.
26 x 2.8 wheels/tyres. Again, either cutting edge or so far off-piste it hurts.
1 x 10. Almost retro now?
I ride a Merida. Seems unfashionable brand wise. It has been called an "Aldi bike" by one friend.
Bikes that do the job you want are never unfashionable.
They are still unfashionable, it just doesn't matter.
I started riding fixed gear track bikes on and off road almost 20 years ago. They were not fashionable and pretty much only used by roadies in the winter
There use on the road then became very fashionable in late 2000's. (good for me as I had much better selection of parts and frames)
They are now no longer the height of fashion although I have seen something called Tracklocross (using a brakeless fixed track bike on easy off road, i.e what I have done for 20 years) so I may still be just in fashion in those circles.
Another 10 years and I would guess I will be very out of fashion and not even the winter roadies will be using fixed as they will be too old.
Even though mine is relatively current I’d say it’s still unfashionable.
1. It’s a hardtail made of aluminium and not a full sus in carbon.
2. It’s got a non-stealth reverb on it.
3. It’s got Superstar wheels on it which though light, straight, wide and subtle, are neither Hope, nor Stans, nor carbon.
I like it it but I don’t think many would covet it so I’d say unfashionable.
full rigid steel. long wheelbase. curly shopping bike handlebars. thumbshifters. rear rack.
unfashionable by design.
26" 100mm travel front and rear, 27.2 rigid post, 69/72 degree angles, 3x9 sram drive train, QR wheels and a kona.
Total singletrack killer though. And FAST!
Up until a month ago I was riding a 26er 100mm hardtail with a 71 degree head angle and short reach. 27.2 rigid seatpost and it was 3x9 XT until just before Christmas.
I rode my brothers 27.5 plus Kona Unit while we were out for a ride together and it felt more capable than mine, then last month I bought a Marin Pine Mountain 1.
The Marin is still unfashionable, but it's a bit more modern, has tapered forks, boost spacing and 1x11. It also has a fixed 27.2 post yet I don't feel the need to lower the saddle as much.
I feel it's fair to say that modern bikes are more capable than the older ones, but as always the rider is more important than the bike, and your unfashionable bike is as fun as it always has been. I prefer my new bike, but still loved the old one.
Full-sus: Fork isn’t boost. Rims only 25mm wide.
Hardtail: Not boost. 25mm rims. 10 speed. 750mm bars.
Almost fashionable. Yeah.
kerley
They are still unfashionable, it just doesn’t matter...
Fashion is a construct that only exists in the mind. As you say, it doesn't matter - but I wonder if it's a form of mental illness. 🙂
The bike remains a bike.
Fashion is a construct that only exists in the mind.
Not really. It just means something that is popular or of the latest style. A 1990's MTB is neither popular or of the latest style therefore is not fashionable.
Fashion is a construct that only exists in the mind.
...or created by companies trying to sell more gear.
full rigid steel. long wheelbase. curly shopping bike handlebars. thumbshifters. rear rack.
Ton that sounds as 'unfashionable' as an East End pop-up boutique bike happening/retrobiscuit buffet😉

But if people are buying them because they are a certain style, deliberately unfashionable, aren’t they just a different side of the same coin/fashion?
like the kid you see in old, knackered clothes, but they are old and knackered in just the right way
tomhoward, yes.
malvernrider, that is a lovely looking tourer.
Never had you down as the fashion type Ton 😉
Just head to a retro mug Facebook group full of idiots paying way over the odds
Erm, they know about eBay too, soz to burst your cleverness bubble .
Still running 560mm bars on both my mtb's.
Still tootle about on my On One Inbred 26” rigid forks, paddle brake/gear levers. 3x9 gears. Great fun to ride.
Never had you down as the fashion type Ton
the type of bikes i ride were fashionable in the 50's mate.
In addition to the above, it's got ergon grips, and until they broke the ones with built in bar ends...
And a straight steerer.
Now I'm just praying nothing on it breaks as there won't be any replacements for it!

Had this from new but rebuilt by "Pace" using the original Frame a fork.
Not to modern geometry.
Regards Andrew
