Building a single speed and want to recycle an SLX triple crankset removing the big and granny rings. Trouble is of course that the bolts are too long to hold just one ring in place.
a) can I get shorter bolts?
b) anyone wanna swap my triple for their single
c) any other suggestions?

Thanks

Just grind the bolts down, careful not to take too much off the ends of your fingers in the process!

Short bolts for singlespeed rings available - I used to get them from HubJub and the like.

No problems at all.

Cut your existing bolts down or you can buy shorter ones for single rings.

Or thicker washers are available as spacers

assuming its the male/female bolt/nut assembly, shorted the nut bit, not the bolt. 😀

are you planning on using the current middle ring? You would be better off using a NW type ring or at least a dedicated single speed ring with a chain device to retain it.

You will need spacers anyway to improve the chainline.

No spacer has ever been near any of my drivelines. That's three different triple to single conversions.

I used homemade washer when going single speed and keeping the same bolts from my double

My standard approach is to use what is readily available and easy - 1p coins that I drill with a pillar drill

I have a grind a small amount off one side as it was fouling something

I've never used spacers on either 1x or single speed. Never had a problem with chain line

I did this using copper washers that fitted over the inner bolt sleeves, only cost pennies at hardware store. 🙂

No spacers on my chainring (Raceface NW and LX cranks) although I did move some of the BB spacers to get the best chainline(73mm Bottom bracket)

maybe on a double but won't the middle ring position of a triple be...you know... middle?

unless your bb is out of whack anyway

Get shorter bolts or fit a bashring to the outer and use the current ones.

+1 for outer bashing. Then there is no need for shorter bolts, and u can probably get away without a NW front chainring. Especially if it's a hardtail.
