How to tie jacket to bike frame?

Im experimenting between hip pack, back pack and no pack. The biggest flaw in the ‘no-pack’ camp is if I want to take a jacket off during a ride, or take one with me just-in-case.

How do STW-ers lash their jacket to their bike, if they don’t use hip pack or back pack?

On the gravel bike, if I'm not taking a frame bag of some sort, I roll up a jacket as small as poss and lash it to the bars with a couple of Restrap fast straps. On the mtb I nearly always take an Evoc hip pack

Normally that's only a lightweight shell for me, and it'll fit in a jersey pocket. If I'm bringing a more substantial jacket, I'm probably either happy I'm wearing it the whole time, or I'll want enough other stuff that I'm bringing a bag.

Roll it up and ties the arms round your waist.

My solution to this is a 7Mesh Northwoods jacket.

Folds into it's own pocket and has straps built in for frame/bar attachment.

I use a 2.5ltr saddlebag from Decathlon which i can just about stuff a montane prism jacket in. it's just a bit bigger than one just for tools but a lot less bulky than a full on saddlepack. Might want some sort of collar or the Topeak DP mount if using a dropper though.

Can you rol/fold it up small

and strap it to the top tube?

@zerocool: that’s my thought. I don’t actually have any suitable straps to attach it to the top tube. So part of my question is what straps people are using to do exactly that. And does anyone have any advice of the pros and cons - having actually done it regularly?

I just stuff it in the cables in front of my handlebars almost like a basket, and then put it on for the descents.

Basically, this but depends on my ride. If I'm going to be venturing well off-road (I live and ride in the Scottish Highlands) I'll have a bag of some sort (frame bag, bum bag, rucksack) for spare layers, food and so on anyway.

Plenty of options already, I just repurposed and small stuff sack from Go Outdoors and added some straps with clips on the sewing machine. Nylon webbing and buckles bought from Amazon.

Prior to that I just rolled it into its hood and adjusted my Peaty's Holdfast wrap and stuck it under that.

Can be as simple or as complex as you want to make it.

You could also modify a hip pack to have some external storage. I blatantly ripped off High Above ETC straps idea, modded my EVOC pro, again peanuts on ebay and little work on the machine.

I've never worn a jacket on a bike!

Jack Moir wore one tied around his waist for a stage of the recent EDR in Poland...not ideal.

You can buy rolls of velcro that sticks to itself. Just cut a couple of strips and wrap it round the rolled up jacket and top tube or bars.

Wearing it like the model above, while looking incredibly suave, is actually not that good on the bike as it eventually ends up around your neck once you start heading downhill. I roll it up like a ciggy and tie it up so it's over one shoulder and under the other arm. That way it's not digging into my stomach on the climbs and won't get tangled in the back wheel should it unravel. I did use to wrap it round the bars and wedge it all inbetween the cables but my proper bike has headset cable routing so there's not enough cable to tuck it around now.

I have a very small drybag which has two loops which let you  use a Velcro strap to attach where’s easiest on your bike. This also avoids the sleeve becoming unrolled and getting in the back wheel which happened to someone in my riding group. He stopped quickly.

My most minimalist waterproof jacket folds up to about the size of a small 29er tube so can just bundle into the toptube bag.

I just 'borrowed' some of these X shaped elastic bands from work and leave them wrapped around my bottle cage ( https://www.rymanbusiness.com/q-connect-assorted-x-bands-100x11mm-pack-of-100g-kf14679--4?srsltid=AfmBOoreEd5qs0qVRw6_0o27L9-qYhWFHnJ6hDT4iM6HXWjjjQ2BesDU)

If i ever need to stash a jersey/jacket i just stuff it in for a low cost and simple solution that i don't need to remember before i set off

Similar to @ads678 I use two loops of elastic. I wrap it around the exposure light bracket on the bars when not in use carrying a jacket.

Doing that, plus using a water filter makes my 3L bumbag easily big enough for monster rides if weather conditions are ok because I can fill it full of food and whatever other bits I need.

(plus water bottle, onup pump, spare tube and tools on frame, and a tool wrap of a few spares under seat where they always live for all rides)

Wee bag. I've one that goes under my seat, old skool styleee, or larger one that fits just above the shock. Added bonus that I can fit in puncture kit and tube as well...

I have really gone off backpacks in the summer so now I have a tiny bar bag with tools and snacks in it which has elastic expander webbing in the front for my jacket. It’s made by a Ukrainian company - fable bag - and I found it on instagram of all places. Really neat little thing but now I want one for each bike…

Somewhere in my shed is a Blackburn Outpost bottle cage - bought to fit 1 litre Sigg bottles, it has adjustable straps - you'd easily be able to stash a jacket in it, even wrapped around a bottle.

Screenshot_20250611-062945.png I have 2 of these in the pocket of all my jackets now. Works well for strapping to bars

I’ve got a cheaply (DHB) running jacket currently that stuffs and zips up into its own pocket, with a largely useless elasticated handle on the side.

I can hook it under my out front Garmin mount and over the back of my stem and it sits nice and securely, or I loop it round the bars and through itself on other bikes.

But basically a stuffable jacket lashed to the bars is my preferred method.

How about rolling it up with the arms left out and then use those wrapped around the top tube and tied in a nice bow?

On the road, I'd probably roll up the torso length and then tie it around my hips, or if very light turn it into a cape like photo above (although I wouldn't fancy doing that offroad if "cape" could easily be snagged by things besides trail).

I’ve always just stuffed jackets into the own sleeve, much less faff that the stuff bags they come with or stuffing into their own pocket

Made these for a few quid with stuff from Amazon, those bungee lock loops would work just as well.

1000019215.jpg

Slit through the stiching. It's only a single run on either side, the second seam line is securing the folded nylon webbing that makes the rigin handle.

1000019216.jpg

Also stiched a small pouch to the outside to hold the waterproof cover.

1000019217.jpg

1000019218.jpg

You simple slide the toggles through whichever way works for you. Again those bungees would work quite well. You could if you didn't want to cut seams thread them through the bungees that are fitted for securing the bottles.

A rather bulky jacket for reference.
