How to 'tell' Google or OSM about new routes?

Just looking at my cycle in from Spean Bridge to Nevis Range for the WC.

I plan on using the path parallel to the A82. I *think* this is the East Highland Way route, and is a cycle route as I pedalled it a few years back, and it has signs on the ground. It appears on PDF maps about active travel in Fort William.

But none of the maps such as Google, Cycle Streets or Komoot route using it - they all send you via road or extra couple of miles and climbs around the woods.

What is the process by which a path like this is 'added' to the base map?

OSM is user editable isn;t it? THat's the "O" part of "Open Street Map". CYcle streets uses OSM mapping. Not sure how it's done but lemme have a scooch around

edit - yes, you can register and add details on OSM

I will see if I can add it after pedalling it again on Friday - it is 5 years since I cycled it before...

Do you mean it's not on Komoot, or that it won't route in Komoot despite it being there?

If the latter then it could be that it's been added to OSM incorrectly (nodes not joined), there's a locked gate, access permissions are wrong, or Komoot has a preference for surface type not suitable for your bike type.

On OSM it's shown as a "Track" and Allowed Access is "All" so that suggests it ought to route, but OSM routing can be a bit iffy. Some of it also forms part of a named mountain bike route in OSM "10 under the Ben". That bit will route in cycle.travel which gets its info from OSM but the section which runs towards Spean Bridge is shown but doesn't route. If under Allowed Access "Bicycles=Y" is added that might do it (or it might not!).

The whole length is shown on Strava's Global Heatmap showing that it does get used and it does route OK in Strava.

Checking and correcting routing in OSM can be, in my experience, a bit of a nightmare as many contributors just look at features on a map as a visual representation (like a paper map) without considering the routing implications of what they are adding.

I've had a look at the Openstreetmap for this section. Are you thinking of NCR 78?
https://explore.osmaps.com/?lat=57.084733&lon=-4.755282&zoom=11.7594&style=Standard&type=2d&overlays=os-ncn-layer

I couldn't see any obvious reason why you wouldn't be routed down this as all the tracks are flagged correctly as allowing bicycles, so unless you've accidentally set your routing to paved surfaces only it should work.

However, there is a gate on the map which had missing and incorrect tags, in particular with "bicycles" set to no. I don't think this should have blocked routing but it may have done. I've corrected the map but it's unlikely to make any difference in the near future so you might have to plot it manually.

You can usually figure out where the problem area is by using RideWithGPS or Strava and building the route a few hundred yards at a time. Eventually you'll hit a point where the path planner backtracks and finds an enormous detour and the error is somewhere between there and your last point.

Komoot / Strava etc etc only update their maps from the OSM master map on an infrequent basis, so changes take a very long time to propogate.

Kommot seems to update every 14 days or so. I've had it update less than 48 hours after I'd made a change, it just depends where you are in their update cycle.

I plan using RidewithGPS OSM layer and often have OSM open in another window to fix the base map when it won't allow bicycle auto routing over rights of way. I've also found a couple of missing bridleways after seeing others ride them on Strava and comparing the council definitive map and added them too.  It usual takes a few days to filter through to RWGPS.

I am wondering if it is because the route still uses a section of main road out of Spean Bridge? All the maps (understandably) route you initially north east out of Spean Bridge - even when I force by using waymarkers on the route I want to take.

Are you thinking of NCR 78?

Nope.
It runs alongside the railway and/or A82.

I have this morning managed to get Komoot to show it:
https://www.komoot.com/tour/1241909299?ref=wtd

It is not a problem for me, I kind of knew the way and would follow my nose if needed.

I noted last week on Rousay, Shapinsay and Orkney Mainland that Komoot kept telling me they were gravel routes, and Cycle Streets didn't like what it thought were 'main' A-roads. But then there is little user data for up there I guess.

It is just a shame if anyone is looking for routes, they sometimes do not show up.
