You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
This is a very specialised question and I'd be surprised if anyone could answer it but I'll give it a try anyway.
I've got a VW Golf with Towbar & bike rack. When the rack is on, it makes an annoying beeping noise when the indicators are being used.
Does anyone know how to turn the noise off ? Or at least, make it quieter ?
They're designed to do that so you go 'Ooo!, I must remember my extra length whilst I turn' Not really relevant with a bike rack & highly annoying I guess. As for turning it off/down, maybe a dealer can wave the VAG at it??
Pretend it's an Audi?
Our after market one is so loud, I wrapped the box in boot in gaffer tape to make it a bit quieter.
It is useful to remind you that you are riding/bike rack carrying, and that lights are working.
It's the rules . . .
Audible (or visible warning) are required by law. If it's an aftermarket Towbar, follow Matt's advice. If it is an OE fit then you might struggle as the 'beep' may be integrated into another system like the seatbelt chime for example.
Or try these:

Trade your VW in for a BMW then you don't need to use your indicators again!
Mine does it too, it winds the wife up but I seem to be able to dial it out. On our annual holiday to France when were spending about 6hrs in the car the car is so full of stuff it drowns out the sound. If we're using the rack locally it's only a short journey so can tolerate it. No idea how to disable it. I assumed there would be a switch on the unit somewhere, but if it's a legal requirement then maybe not and you're stuck with it.
Don't connect the 7/13 pin plug.
Now I have just had my tow bar moved from a Mk7 golf 1.4 tsi GT 2013 model with a beep, to a 2016 golf 1.4 tsi GT, there is a significant update to new one.
Beep now gone and display shows a trailer on screen and indicator shows and extra green double arrow on the dash in eye line.
Be aware that the car needs to be coded to the tow bar even with a bike rack or it will affect the adaptive cruse control and city stop function
The beeping noise seems to be coming from speakers in the boot. Thought it might be possible to wrap the speakers with something to quieten the noise. However, I'm unable to locate them!
It's a Golf FSI 1.6 2007, anyone how you might be able to get to them?
It's designed for trailers. By law there needs to be an indication that the indicators are working, so buzzer (aftermarket kits and older cars), or light (newer cars with integrated electrics).
It'll be a black box hidden somewhere behind a panel. Mine is behind a panel in the boot where I access the rear bulbs - depends on the installer though.
I've located roughly where the Speakers are which are making the beeping. They are where the Boot lights are, behind some vents. Trouble is they are really hard to get to and would involve taking a lot of the plastics off. I might try and tape a load of rags over it.
I found the after market box in the cavity behind the boot lining and wrapped a bit of carpet round it. Can still hear it but it's not annoying anymore.
Yes, I'm just trying to get it to be a lot quieter. If it's not possible to turn it off I wouldn't mind it as much if it was really quiet.
I've finally found it! It's a small black box on the right hand side behind the cars cavity! I put some guerilla tape over the speaker and its now a lot quieter. Think I coukd get it even more silent by wrapping some cloth round it.
Just silicon sealant into the speaker?
I desperately want some of this Guerilla Tape.
More expensive, you can swap the lights on the bike rack for LEDs which use sufficiently little current that most cars don't know they're there.
Think the last solution is too expensive and complicated for me. I'll see how it goes with the quieter beeping for a while and if I want it more silent I'll look at more ways to cover the speaker on the black box.
I'm in the stuff the speaker grille with silicon sealant camp.
Makes life so much nicer, especially as I suffer with meniere's disease.
