shimano di2 6770 i think was made obsolete a couple of years ago but i am trying to purchase a rear derailleur. I have checked ebay, gumtree and online stores here and in Germany but cant find one anywhere. Is there any other route i can use to try and get hold of one?

i cant afford to go 6870 as second hand prices remain high plus there only seems to be SS versions out there. I live in steep hill area and need a big cassette so at least a 32. Could i use a Wolf tooth road link to run a larger cassette?

Shimano have been a bugger for the Di2 discontinuation for the earlier models.

Is the mech completely dead ?  Your best bet is secondhand, or ebay, or even ebay US, I've successfully bought Shimano Dura Ace 7400 UG sprockets from the states (dating from the 90's) brand new from the US ebay site.

Even now, second hand Dura Ace 7402 kit is almost as much as it was new when I bought it many years ago.

You may have to suck it up and pay the silly second hand process.  The newer Di2 is cross compatible, but the older ones weren't - what idiot thought that up.  It's like 7400 dura ace gear components aren't compatible with any others, as 7400 had it's own cable pull, so you can't use it with any other mech or lever, it has to be the same series.  Fortunately, mine still works like new, 30 years later.

There’s a 6870 on eBay for £80? Other than that I reckon it will be all down to searching and patience...

Tom - that is 11spd and as i have 10spd it means i have to then purchase FD as well because 11 doesnt run with 10 stuff. Shimano seem to have discontinued 6770 pretty quickly and shut out people mixing stuff up by changing the firmware to stop this.

I will try Ebay US but that does fill me with dread that i end up with a dud or getting shafted somehow.

you can use a hanger extender to allow for a bigger size cassette but it won't change the amount of chain slack the derailleur can accomodate. What is your current front and rear gearing? You might have to sacrifice some top end to get the low gear you want.

BTW - search ebay for hanger extender and you can get them for about £3.

I currently run a compact 50/34 with a 11/34 using Tiagra 4700 but to make life easier i think i can happily live with a 32t as that seems to be about the max di2 will go although that is with the GS version. It seems SS versions will run to 32t as long as you dont cross chain (which i dont do) so hoping to do that as they are the only ones available second hand generally because people have opted to go for GS or upgraded to dura.

you should be fine with a 32 on a SS cage, I used to do that with 105. With a hanger extender you could probably go larger but reduce the size of the front ring to keep it in capacity e.g. if your current set up is fine with a 50 - 34 max then you could go to a 48 and fit a cassette with a 36t sprocket.

why do you need to be 10spd? I know you trying to keep cost down but it is looking a bit moon on a stick?

Looking at you other post you looking to make you bike Di2, so why not go 11spd from the start? save a lot of hassle now and in the long term finding parts, you finding it hard to find a 10spd mech  now, prob only going to be even hard in a year+, if you have to replace the one you get?

the only thing is wheel/freehub body? prob cheaper and quicker to find 2nd hand 11spd wheel, + the 6870 rear mech. than 6770 rear mech. (if they that sort after people will push the price up bidding)

Sell the front mech you got, get 2nd hand 6870,

shifters, cables etc should all work with 11spd F & R mech.

Dont forget to access ebay directly from .com and .de , it often opens up my searches to a bunch of shippable items that weren't visible on .co.uk

If you’ve not updated your firmware can’t you run a new 6870 mech and cassette on the old 6870 group?

Mtb rob - yeah i have pretty much resigned myself to having to go 11 spd. I guess i will just have to take the hit on the FD I bought and see what i can get for it. Sadly as there isnt really an upgrade path from 6870 other than dura then it means not many second hand choices and not much in the way of a bargain. Its not urgent yet but it would be nice to sort it out soon.

Anything here useful -  http://www.petracycles.co.uk/search.php?search_query=6770&x=0&y=0

I haven't used them in years though.

--- EDIT ---

All the links that that search throws up seem broken, sorry!! You could always give them a ring and see what they've got.

I got my friend in Canada to check over that side of the pond and it is exactly the same there. There is one derailleur for sale on ebay and it has had 21 bids and has 2 days left and is already more expensive than a new 6870 one. Whilst looking though he pointed out that you can get a new 6870 from the US delivered for roughly £90 (dependant on rates). That seems too good to be true so what am i missing other than the obvious difficulty in returning it for warranty/broken? I think they are about £135 at the cheapest here.

Try Totalcycling.com, they seem to specialise in redundant stuff. They found me a rim for an old Mavic Ksyrium and they even have Mavic spokes in stock.

Globati - no joy with totalcycling but thanks for the tip.

Has anyone bought stuff from US shops via Ebay US before? £90 for a derailleur is quite a saving but not if it has hidden charges or no buyer protection or anything else i may hsve forgotten.
