Hi guys,

I am looking at getting this Straitline outer bash guard: Clicky Clicky

to go with this crankset: Clicky Clicky

How do I choose the correct size, I want to keep the small & middle rings and lose the big outer ring? Apart from just getting told whats the correct one to buy, how do you go about knowing in the first place as I may want to do this again on other bikes?

Thanks guys 😀

I take it you're going for triple because the double and bash is out of stock? Just be aware the double is 36-22 whilst you'll be on a 32-22 with this one. Might not be an issue but I run a 36 on my double and bash set up and I think I'd rather have it for the odd fast section, 32 is quite easy to spin out on depending on your normal riding.

To answer your original question though - the triple has a 32 tooth middle ring so you want a 32-34 size bash ring.

Two main things are to decide how big a middle ring you want to run (think the SLX will come with a 32t middle) and then make sure you a) get the bash big enough to work with a 32t middle ring and b) that its a 4-bolt pattern to fit the cranks.

The rest is as easy as removing the outer ring and bolting on the bash (and then the faff of setting up your front mech to run with 2 rings instead of 3!).

As above - choose your bash guard for the number of teeth your covering, NOT replacing.

Ah thankyou, I have just checked and you are indeed correct, I think I'll get the SLX double & bash and then change the guard. I think the extra range would as you say prove useful.

So I take it I just look at the largest tooth count and get a bash to match that, I for some reason was looking at the range of the disc that I was removing, DOH! It all makes sense now, thankyou 😀

Would it be useful to get a double front mech? Also, if I do get a double front mech, how does it affect the front shifter, as they dont have double front shifters do they? It'll still have the 3 click positions?

I run a 34t middle ring on my double and bash SLX (I got the one that came as a dual-ring set-up)and even on that I do occasionally spin out on fast descents. I would strongly recommend going for something bigger than a 32t.

In terms of bash guards: I'd recommend going for one of those e-thirteen turbochargers: very light and strong.

There is no problem with the front shifter when using a double front mech. The mech just wont allow the shifter to do the final shift.
I using a triple front mech but its adjusted to only allow shifting between the 2 rings and not onto the bash 😉

Another vote for a 36t ring

+1 for the 36t SLX double and bash - I think that's the standard anyway. As the others said, just wind in the stop screw on the mech. Worth lowering it a bit and having a fiddle to get the max gear availability it both rings.

You should leave the standard bash on before you pay extra and buy that Straitline job. I have lots of red bits on my bike but didn't bother with the bash as I've seen a few pics of coloured bash's that don't look that great

I use a normal front mech and never changed it from when I had a triple on. Just don't change up to the bash!

I have the 32T middle ring and it is only a pain on road desents. Have a look at Blackspire bashes - pretty nice.

Thanks chaps 😀

One last question, what size rear mech should I be looking at for a double, normally I'd say a mid cage, but with the 36t do I need the long cage? Also I'm still unsure if I'm going 10sp or 9sp?

Cheers 😀

I'd say mid-cage will be fine.

Can't see 10spd making much difference so I'd stick to 9spd if its cheaper.

+1 for med cage on a 22/36 double set up. I run a mid cage X9 mech with no probs at all.

Also definately support upgrading from 32 to 36. I tried to do it on the cheap a few years ago and ended up changing to a 36T within a few weeks.
