Sorry if this has already been done, but I've only just seen it.

Steve Peat has just shared the below pic on Facebook:

[img] [/img]

How things Change! Two bikes, 20 years and worlds apart. Both ridden by Steve Peat, Athlete. His 1993 Kona Hei Hei and his 2013 Santa Cruz V10 Carbon.

And I would take the V10 everytime. Despite the Hei Hei being one of the best looking bikes available imo.

I had a krona of that year, gate like 20" (or 21) frame and stupidly long stem like that one, narrow bars too. Like Shit off a shovel when you put some power down, just don't try going down steep stuff or lifting the front end.

Edit, Just spotted the original clutch mech device, forgot about those, was that one of "crud" pete's innovations? Can't remember

Notice the only element that hasn't changed is wheel size! Lets see what the next 20yrs brings. Probably do away with wheels altogether.

He did used to race DH on it Alan. There was less difference in those days. Note the suspension fork and disc brake, very advanced for the early 90s and 'really unecessary on an XC bike'

1993 DH race. Note how many bar ends and canti brakes you see. Mainly HTs, although I did spot a Manitou FS and a GT RTS. No full faces either.

'How times have changed for Steve Peat'

It does, as it shows two different DH race bikes, 20 years apart 🙄

It does, they are both world cup dh bikes of their time.

If I was on the V10, and Steve Peat was on the old Kona, he'd still be faster than me! 😳

Peaty is racing 650b this weekend...

I had a Hei Hei around that time. Pile of utter crap by modern standards but the welds were nice (Sandvik).

Looks like they were having lots of fun in the video up there. Wonder whether there's room for an "xc downhill" niche, to be ridden on hardtails with a maximum of 100mm of travel?

I couldn't disagree more.
I've got a 93 Explosif in the garage, and I've had a Hei Hei, 2 Cinder Cones and a Lava Dome over the years, all from the 91-96 vintage years.

I've got a 93 Cinder Cone in the shed, it still gets ridden a couple of times a week. OK, nothing too hard as it's a kiddie transporter but it's a great bike still.
