Once this was top flight XC race bike , dripping in XTR, Chris King and SID. Now its an eBay bargain, wearing panniers and a rack and is bimbling off to tesco for the groceries.

Still got the Chris King though 🙂

Apart from the cranks, and panniers, that’s lovely.

Wouldn’t want to ride it obviously, but it’s lovely.

It's like the Gazza of the bike world. It's probably going to take some fish and chips to a rogue Kline in a Canal somewhere to try and calm it down.

I'll give you the cranks, they are awful.

Brother has just done up his early/mid '90's Stumpjumper Comp. managed to source some new old stock of period Deore XT groupset with thumb shifters, got some period Rockshox forks. Still got the 'patting' of the bumps and scrapes from his early MTB days mucking about in the Peak District and racing. Rides lovely apparently, but not a patch on even a pretty low level modern bike when things get even moderately rough. But he loves it for bumbling around with his son on gravel paths, bridleways and general mucking about. Things have moved on significantly. No matter what you're riding as long as it is relatively modern you're properly overbiked.

Always loved those frames, such a classic.
I’ve kept a steel, rigid singlespeed for shopping too. Nothing flash, a Genesis IO, but its the only 26” wheeler that fits with my trailer 😊

hehe - mine is still dripping in old XTR kit. I managed to find a set of 1" steerer RC39's with 80mm of travel too. I still love it but admittedly don't ride it that much anymore 🙂

Sacrilege! Liberate it to a loving owner for £££ and get a hybrid.

Srsly...shows you what the real value of high end kit is. Bugger all really.

Your mrs wasn't at Comrie Croft yesterday? I found myself gazing a little too long.

At the bike, at the bike.

^ That exact frame, Pace forks, full XTR, FireXC's (in red, natch).

Bluebook shows US rrp as $1699 in 1999.

Cost me £70.

I swear I'm going to use this one, its not like I've got bontrager's piling up in the garage. Oh, wait...

Matt - not mine - I'm down in the lakes 🙂
Al's right too - resale value is bugger all but it still puts a smile on my face - the handling is different to modern bikes but I quite like the quick steering to be honest!

My first proper mountain bike. Grey/yellow one. Cycled across India on it before it was robbed in Manchester. Still know the frame number.

Lovely... have a similar RM Blizzard. It's incredible how far things have moved on...what on earth did we think we were doing?

You could use that head angle as a set square, and that stem exists in two different time zones.

Otherwise, a fine looking machine.

Panniers full of groceries, and SIDs? Good luck keeping that in a straight line 🙂

At least it is / was being used in anger though. Rather that than some retro garage-queen sitting on NOS panaracers that only gets taken to the pub on dry days.

Not exactly the same level of high-end, but my ‘96 Lava Dome (a bike I lasted after as a sixteen year old) is currently running semis and being used as a commuter.

My 2005 Cove Hummer with Chris King, Hope, Thomson etc etc now used for a 10 minute ride to work and occasional play time in the local woods 🙄 Old Marz forks died got a pair of Fox, likewise Hope brakes replaced with XTs £300 I wasn't anticipating but it still makes me grin riding it. Unfortunately once the wheels die it'll be game over then 🙄
