I weighed the bits as I took them off my bike.
XT 11-36 10 speed cassette 337g
XT triple crankset 24/32/42 776g
XT chain 268g
XT rear derailleur 261g
XT front derailleur 137g
XT front shifter/cable 146g

XT M8000 Cassette 11-42 433g
XT M8000 32T crank 689g
XT M8000 chain 263g
XT M8000 rear derailleur 272g
XT M8000 rear shifter 131g

Weight saving 137g

That's £2.08 a gram 😀

You'd save more if you were fitted and didn't need a dinner plate at the back 😉 1x1 even lighter still.

What did the old rear shifter weigh?

Weight wasn't really a significant reason for the switch for me.

I make that a 263g saving which assuming your original figure was correct equals roughly a £ a gram which is the old weight weenie truism?

You could have put a new ring on the old cranks which would bring the lb/£ down a fair bit!

Or just binned the front mech which gives £0/g. Pretty good. In fact if you sell the old mech you are being paid to save weight.

Reuse the old cranks? No weight difference in the arms, just the fewer rings

Those XT cassettes are seriously weighty!
Isn't an x01 about 270g? Granted, it's more expensive, but it will be interesting as to how it effects the £/lb ratio.

I didn't do it to save weight - I did it to fit my reverb remote on my bars more comfortably.

waits for coaster brakes to come (back) into fashion - then maybe 0.5 handlebars will be all the rage leaving a spare hand to push less awesome riders out of the way..."passing"

Sunrace 10 speed? ~£50 l 395g apparently.

Superstar oval ring £26 / 50g

Bin front mech/shifter/rings...

For £75 you can save about the same weight (as if it really matters) and decide if a 1xN - 11-42 drivetrain is really for you without spankings ~£300 on M8000...

Biggest weight loss may be in burning fat due to the extra fitness you'll need for 1x over 3x 😀

(unless it transforms to muscle)
