I'm thinking about build a 29er as a single speed, with the option to convert it to a 1x9 (or similar) if I don't get on with the SS.

I'm not really up on MTB specs, so don't know what's good value. I'd be happy with BB7 brakes, but maybe it would be wiser to buy a groupset from Merlin. Anyway, I was wondering what sort of figure to get everything (other than frame and forks).

I see the Kona Unit SS complete bike is £799, but by pulling figures out of the air, I seem to be totting up more than that for the components alone.

I found the same for a SS 26er a few years back. When I priced up the bits separately I think it came to £1200-£1300 with a couple of gaps like grips that the shop probably would've thrown in for free.

I'm sure it could be done for less than that if you really wanted it to be cheap, and if you went rigid you could do it pretty easily. I'm sure there are cheaper ones than the kona about somewhere as full builds, too.

Second hand I think you'd build something pretty decent for sub £500

Think I'd spend £745 on the cannondale one.

If you are six foot plus I could introduce you to a voodoo hoodoo. Its geared and rigid at the moment. But I'm sure we could come to some arrangement. Looking for £190 for the bike at the moment.

Are you going for a similar/identical spec to the unit? I know my pace build is running reasonably dear for a singlespeed but it's got plenty of nice bits on, you only really save on the price of derailleurs and shifters, hence not massively cheaper than most other bikes. The cannondale is a nice riding bike, had one, sold it to fund the pace frame.

Thanks for all the advice. I'm thinking of a different frame to the Kona, otherwise it would probably make sense to buy an off-the-shelf bike. I'm narrowing it down to something like the Stooge or Singular Gryphon (in an ideal world it would be a Jones) and the guys there can probably help and advise.

I have a Trek Marlin.... with SS/alfine set-up. Works a treat.
I binned the shonky forks, and run straight carbon 'on-ones' now. All sourced from here, for under £450.
