I guess how long is a piece of string but anyone know the minimum recommended bolt thread should be present in a fork post mount ?
Edit: Going to measure it at home but just asking 🙂
Personally I'd be looking for well over 5mm, ideally 10mm+. It's not hard or expensive to get longer bolts! 🙂
Do you mean how long should the bolt go into the hole or how much thread is the minimum once you strip some?
Personally with it being a brake I would want the bolt to within a couple of MM of the bottom of the hole and any damage to the thread it would be helicoiled
good point TJ - I could use a spare bolt and wind it in the PM and see how deep it is and then use that as a guide - Just need new bolts on a mixed setup - thanks TJ and PP.
How do, I stand to be corrected, but in general design....min depth should be the diameter of the bolt. So for M5, 5mm depth etc. But as per PP, for something a bit critical like brakes, as long as possible!
Cheers Martin 🙂
As it happens, I had to check Fox's website for this t'other day. According to Fox there should be 10-12mm of thread engaged. Apologies if it's 'Grandma suck eggs' job, but with that amount of thread engagement, be careful you don't bottom out the bolt and strip the thread.
HTH.
Cheers fat....
Yeah my sentiments - but 10-12mm seems spot on with above thoughts - I'll measure tonight and take get a bolt with a happy medium 🙂
Steel into Aluminium, 1.5xDia minimum as a rule
Should really be 1.5D+2P
So M6x1 thread would be:
6x1.5 =9mm
+ 2P(pitch)
= 11mm thread engagement
This is all assuming correct bolt torque
(Steel into steel you can generally get away with 1D thread engagement but not in Aluminium)
cool 🙂
